Psilocybe cubensis "B+" on rye
    #868012 - 09/06/02 11:14 PM (19 years, 25 days ago)

*7th September*
3 cups of whole rye grain were simmered for 30 mins, drained, rinsed, drained.
Rye was packed into 3 quart (I think.. I have no idea what a quart looks like. But they?re big) jars with polyfil filters. 2 tablespoons of dry vermiculite was added to each jar to absorb excess water. A knifetip of plaster of paris was added to each jar, I assume this is okay as plaster of paris is just dehydrated gypsum. Jars were PC?ed at 15psi for 70 minutes. Jars were shaken immediately after being removed from the PC (as soon as the pressure had dropped). I plan to inoculate the jars tomorrow with multispore B+ recieved today from a generous friend :smirk:.

*8th September*
Jars inoculated with approx, 3ml of B+ spore water. Placed in incubator at approx. 27 degrees C.

*11th September*
First sign of mycelium!

*14th September*
Considerable growth in one jar, less in the other two but still good. All jars shaken.

*18th September*
One jar completed! Only 10 days after inoculation. This B+ is phenomenal
One jar has a day or 2 to go
One jar doesn?t seem to have recovered from shaking.

Hey man,
I hope all goes well! By the way, those are quart jars (just under 1 litre).
I just had a couple of questions...Polyfil filters? What are these? Can you elaborate on this a little as to what they are and where to source them in our humble wee country...?
Also, that is a damn crazy mixture of stuff you are using for you jars...what was the reasonings of using the extra things as opposed to the standard pure grains?
Thanks and good luck  Good to see the spores goin to use so soon!

Polyfil Filters for Simple Minds
Polyester filter floss was bought from a pet store. I'm not convinced they do a very good job, I'd quite like to get hold of some filter discs but can't really justify paying $NZ2 each + shipping..
Alternatively some Tyvek would be great, I'm sure you can get it in NZ, just not sure where.

Plaster of paris was added instead of gypsum as recommended in Grain for Simple Minds , I think it's to stop the grains from sticking and also because the mushies benefit from the added calcium.

Vermiculite was added to absorb excess water, last time I did grain (my first time) it ended up very wet on the bottom. I figure the verm can't hurt, can anyone give an educated opinion on this?

Actually, polyfill filters do great job. I have used them almost exclusively in the last few years. They work no worse than filter discs or tyvek foil.

But they are much cheaper.

*18th September*
Casing Time!
50/50+ casing mix was prepared according to Ryche Hawke?s recipe .
7 Dessert spoons of PC?ed coco coir
7 Dessert spoons of PC?ed vermiculite
1 Dessert spoon of hydrated lime
2 Dessert spoons of crushed oyster shell
~1/2 cup of bottled water

Check out those rhizos!

A 2 litre ice cream container was wiped out with isopropyl alcohol
A 1/2" layer of damp vermiculite was placed in the bottom:

1 quart jar of rye grain colonised with B+ was spooned on top of the vermiculite and broken up to even it out:

Excess water was squeezed out of handfuls of casing mix, casing mix was sprinkled over the surface to a depth of about 1/2":

The lid was put on the container (not properly) and the casing was put in the incubator:

Jar #2 cased with bottom and top layers of wet vermiculite (~1/2" - 1")

I want to be able to compare the 50/50+ casing and straight verm casing side-by-side, although there is a day between them.

Jar #3 is almost completely colonised but will have to wait a week til I get some poo (compost) delivered.

*27th September*
50/50+ casing was patched a little and placed in the fridge
Straight verm casing is colonising very slowly

*28th September*
50/50+ casing put into the terrarium!

That's an ecuador casing rear left (not expecting much from it)
A Tasmanian casing in front
And the new B+ rear right.
In the middle is a can (with both ends removed) and a 60mm fan at the bottom. The 25 watt bulb sits in this when the terrarium lid is on. This is necessary to keep the temp up (between 20-22 degrees) because room temperature is about 18 degrees here, and it doesnt dry the casings out as much as a bare bulb.

You probably should have used black containers. Or atleast lined the containers with black plastic or something.

The trip was pretty good thanks! Not very strong or visual, but I'll take what I can get.
Here is my heater setup:

I need this because room temp (~17 degrees) is too cold. It's just a baked bean can bent into a square shape at the bottom with a 60x60mm fan taped on. This sits on a grill in the bottom of the terrarium. A 25 watt bulb hangs from the lid and sits inside the can. This keeps the terrarium fairly consistently between 20 & 22 degrees, and doesn't dry out the casings like a bare bulb does. Incidentally the fan is blowing directly onto the wet perlite a few cm below, which is creating very humidity, probably too high for casings. I might have to remove some/all of the perlite.

lol, redneck tek.

nice setup, so you're saying that the blub just sits on the top of the can, kinda just resting there? and the fan is blowing DOWN into the perlite? interesting, is that to force air in an dpush it up around? that's just what i'm guessing, but dude, very nice grow.

and btw, easy trips are fun too!

I'm going to the hardware store today to buy some stuff and to see what I can do. Anyways, SHROOM TIME! w00t

The bulb sits right inside the can. The fan is to distribute the heat, I found when I just had a bare bulb in there that the casing surfaces were getting dried out rapidly. The fan blows the warm air down onto the perlite.

i sent you a msg about your heater, but i'll ask in here in case you didn't get it. I was wondering how you got the computer fan to plug into whatever you have it plugged into. I tried wiring it to the wall but it blew, guess the 12v couldn't handle the 120v  haha, anyways, mind sharing? thnx.

Plugging a 12V fan into the wall is pretty dangerous and guaranteed to fry your fan. You need some sort of adapter to step the mains voltage down to 12V (assuming your fan is meant to run on 12 volts).

So the straight verm casing is doing at least as well as the 50/50+
I think I might have let both the casings dry out way too much.. the humidity in there is 100% but I haven't misted the casings much at all. Can I get some pointers on misting casings? When, how much, how often ... I'm scared of causing aborts. Thanks guys, this whole casing deal is pretty new to me.

Hey man,
They are coming along nicely! Should be ready in a day or two. As for the misting, you should be fine at the moment. I don't mist at all for my entire 1st flush and had excellent results. Especially if you have really high humidity. You just have to make sure to give them a real good misting after the harvest before you put em back in for the 2nd round!
When you are misting during a flush, basically just keep it really light and avoid gettin it on any shrooms (spray between em).
The verm / 50-50 differences are really interesting so far. The 50-50 shrooms look healthier in general, but there is a less even pinset. Those verm cased ones have a crazy frosted look to 'em, but there is a few more fruits and they are more evenly distributed. Does anyone know why this is? (with the frosted look thing)

If you recall I had 3 jars of grain - 2 were cased directly, the third was a bit slower. I used some of it to spawn a quantity of ZooDoo a few weeks ago (this is my first attempt at poo). The B+ tore through it, it was cased a few days ago, patched yesterday and today placed in the terrarium:

I'm very pleased with the ZooDoo's performance, it only costs $6.50 for a 40 litre bag. I sterilized/pasteurized it in the microwave for 10 minutes on high and had no problems with contamination.
Here is the ZooDoo a few days prior to casing, I have never seen anything so rhizomorphic.

Nice log man. Shows how you can win or loose, still coming out happy

I noticed that the one pic you first  had of the contaminated casing (before you knew it), looked a little unhealthy. The caps looked pretty palish-greenish...usually a good indicator that you MIGHT have something else growing in there besides mushroom mycelium.

Glad to see you got a nice second flush there too... got some pretty large ones

Thanks
You're right, when I look at that photo now I can see it. When I was picking some of the shrooms in the lower part of the photo they didn't seem quite right... ah well.

Here is a photo I took just before harvest

I am so proud to have produced such beautiful mushrooms

I actually had my first B+ trip on 4 grams 2 days ago.
The trip was quite weak, I'm not sure whether that was due to tolerance from the 2g of ecuadors I had 2 days before, or whether the B+ themselves are quite weak. I've got exams for the next few weeks so after that I will be able to give them a proper test. They did blue pretty intensely so I'm expecting them to be pretty strong.

*20th October*
The 50/50+ casing was dunked. I just filled up its container with water.. it floated. Held together surprisingly well actually. It's not pinning in a hurry but I will be interested to see whether it produces any further flushes.

*22nd October*
Poo casing is pinning very slowly, but has some monster pins.

Sorry.. I'm in the middle of exams and have put my computer into storage (too much of a distraction!).
Poo casing: first flush was 3 beautiful shrooms, cloned them onto agar. 2nd flush is pinning now.
50/50+ casing: 3rd flush was pretty sweet but the shrooms were quite demented. I might retire it.
Pics soon!

*7th November*
Sorry for the wait folks.. got my computer back today. Last exam tomorrow.

50/50+ casing was dunked then had 1 final flush:

You can see these shrooms are pretty funky. I think it could have been verticillium.. the caps were a bit moist, gills poorly formed. Probably because of the excess humidity.
The bottom shroom in that second pic was destined to be a monster but somehow stopped growing and produced the funkiest looking shroom I have ever grown, I think it deserves to be encased in resin.

I decided this casing had done it's dash and tore it apart before throwing it out.. no sign of contamination.

Poo casing had a nice first flush of 3 beautiful mushies.

Poo second flush:
Sorry, can't upload any more pics today. Will upload some nice mycopr0n tomorrow.

I'm a little disappointed with the poo's performance. I have dunked it and 3rd flush is now pinning.

*12th November*
3rd flush harvested:

Poo casing retired.
Total yield from all 3 casings, 1.5-2 ounces dry
Word on the trip: not particularly potent but very clean trip. Not bad at all!
Here ends this growlog. Thanks for the suggestions and compliments, hope you have learned a thing or two as I have.
