Psilocybe cubensis "B+" on rye
    #868012 - 09/06/02 11:14 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

*7th September*
3 cups of whole rye grain were simmered for 30 mins, drained, rinsed, drained.
Rye was packed into 3 quart (I think.. I have no idea what a quart looks like. But they?re big) jars with polyfil filters. 2 tablespoons of dry vermiculite was added to each jar to absorb excess water. A knifetip of plaster of paris was added to each jar, I assume this is okay as plaster of paris is just dehydrated gypsum. Jars were PC?ed at 15psi for 70 minutes. Jars were shaken immediately after being removed from the PC (as soon as the pressure had dropped). I plan to inoculate the jars tomorrow with multispore B+ recieved today from a generous friend :smirk:.

*8th September*
Jars inoculated with approx, 3ml of B+ spore water. Placed in incubator at approx. 27 degrees C.

*11th September*
First sign of mycelium!

*14th September*
Considerable growth in one jar, less in the other two but still good. All jars shaken.

*18th September*
One jar completed! Only 10 days after inoculation. This B+ is phenomenal
One jar has a day or 2 to go
One jar doesn?t seem to have recovered from shaking.

Hey man,
I hope all goes well! By the way, those are quart jars (just under 1 litre).
I just had a couple of questions...Polyfil filters? What are these? Can you elaborate on this a little as to what they are and where to source them in our humble wee country...?
Also, that is a damn crazy mixture of stuff you are using for you jars...what was the reasonings of using the extra things as opposed to the standard pure grains?
Thanks and good luck  Good to see the spores goin to use so soon!

Polyfil Filters for Simple Minds
Polyester filter floss was bought from a pet store. I'm not convinced they do a very good job, I'd quite like to get hold of some filter discs but can't really justify paying $NZ2 each + shipping..
Alternatively some Tyvek would be great, I'm sure you can get it in NZ, just not sure where.

Plaster of paris was added instead of gypsum as recommended in Grain for Simple Minds , I think it's to stop the grains from sticking and also because the mushies benefit from the added calcium.

Vermiculite was added to absorb excess water, last time I did grain (my first time) it ended up very wet on the bottom. I figure the verm can't hurt, can anyone give an educated opinion on this?

Actually, polyfill filters do great job. I have used them almost exclusively in the last few years. They work no worse than filter discs or tyvek foil.

But they are much cheaper.

*18th September*
Casing Time!
50/50+ casing mix was prepared according to Ryche Hawke?s recipe .
7 Dessert spoons of PC?ed coco coir
7 Dessert spoons of PC?ed vermiculite
1 Dessert spoon of hydrated lime
2 Dessert spoons of crushed oyster shell
~1/2 cup of bottled water

Check out those rhizos!

A 2 litre ice cream container was wiped out with isopropyl alcohol
A 1/2" layer of damp vermiculite was placed in the bottom:

1 quart jar of rye grain colonised with B+ was spooned on top of the vermiculite and broken up to even it out:

Excess water was squeezed out of handfuls of casing mix, casing mix was sprinkled over the surface to a depth of about 1/2":

The lid was put on the container (not properly) and the casing was put in the incubator:

*19th September*
Jar #2 cased with bottom and top layers of wet vermiculite (~1/2" - 1")

I want to be able to compare the 50/50+ casing and straight verm casing side-by-side, although there is a day between them.

Jar #3 is almost completely colonised but will have to wait a week til I get some poo (compost) delivered.

*27th September*
50/50+ casing was patched a little and placed in the fridge
Straight verm casing is colonising very slowly

*28th September*
50/50+ casing put into the terrarium!

That's an ecuador casing rear left (not expecting much from it)
A Tasmanian casing in front
And the new B+ rear right.
In the middle is a can (with both ends removed) and a 60mm fan at the bottom. The 25 watt bulb sits in this when the terrarium lid is on. This is necessary to keep the temp up (between 20-22 degrees) because room temperature is about 18 degrees here, and it doesnt dry the casings out as much as a bare bulb.

You probably should have used black containers. Or atleast lined the containers with black plastic or something.

Plastic doesnt have to be black to be opaque

The trip was pretty good thanks! Not very strong or visual, but I'll take what I can get.
Here is my heater setup:

I need this because room temp (~17 degrees) is too cold. It's just a baked bean can bent into a square shape at the bottom with a 60x60mm fan taped on. This sits on a grill in the bottom of the terrarium. A 25 watt bulb hangs from the lid and sits inside the can. This keeps the terrarium fairly consistently between 20 & 22 degrees, and doesn't dry out the casings like a bare bulb does. Incidentally the fan is blowing directly onto the wet perlite a few cm below, which is creating very humidity, probably too high for casings. I might have to remove some/all of the perlite.
