Mycobags taking forever to Pin
    #8667956 - 07/22/08 02:11 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, so I have seven fully colonized mycobags from TMS.  The strain is Puerto Rican.  The mycelium is very white, and there is a lot of blue bruising due to handling.  I have cut open the top and retaped it shut.  I open and introduce Fresh air 2-3 times a day.  They have been birthed for 14 days.  There is a very strong mushroom smell whenever I exchange the air.  I have only been exchanging the air regularly for about a week.

My question is, what should I do to initiate pinning?  They are getting 12 hours of natural direct sunlight a day, the temp is in the mid 70's.  I have not done a successful grow in years and this is my first attempt at getting back into it.  The extent of my experience is with Sporeworks now discontinued Mycobags.  Does anyone know of any good links to possibly case these with minimal effort.  I don't currently have a fruiting chamber due to my belief that the mycobags would provide humidity.

Should I just wait it out?  How much longer do you think it will take for them to pin?  How much longer should I wait before trying to case them?

I really don't want to lose the entire investment I've made, what would be the most foolproof way to get fruits?

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you!

Here is a picture of one of the bags, they all resemble this.

*UPDATE*

So I've decided to spawn some of these bags to pasteurized POO.  A couple of questions.  What should spawn to substrate ratio be if I want to minimize contams and maximize colonization speed?

Also I'm casing with a 50/50 peat/verm mix.  Should I use this for the bottom layer of the casing too, or use just straight verm?  Can i get by without using a bottom layer?

Thanks!

There is a calculator in my sig. It'll help for your ratios. Happy growing.

I've used one pint of spawn per pound of poo with success. Never used a bottom layer. Just hpoo/straw in a bag. Fan multiple times a day or as often as possible. Spray sides with water when ever they look mostly dry.

I believe that in a bag your gases build up and being heavy they stay close to the substrate. I would recommend cutting 2 small holes(dime size) in the bag at the level of the sub. Fill holes with poly, or cover with tyvek. Also increase FAE to 10 times a day or more if possible.

I've grown a few bags but never in direct sun light. Also gave them more a lot more fresh air.

I have seen posts like this where the bags were not opened or fanned at all and did fine. The slits with polyfill may be ok, but that is really what the filter patch on the bag is for (assuming there is one). I personally think that I have better results when I spray the sides of the bag if they look dry (usually daily or every other day) and fan a couple times a day. 10 times a day seems unrealistic and altering the bags seems unnecessary.

1:2 is a very fast ratio to use but I usually use 1:3 or 1:4 without any problems:heart:

Ok, so two of my bags have started pinning.  YIPPEEEE!!!!  When I get my POO this week should I use a bag that hasn't started pinning yet or ones that have already gone through their first flush in terms of using for Spawn?  Thanks

Without doing any research, I would think that it would be better to use spawn that has not yet pinned.
