Hey this is my first time growing and I'm going through your exact same dilemma dude. I have a wet spot on BRF (definitely bacteria) that won't colonize at all... And to make things worse that same cake is pinning so I need to do something soon! So tell me, how did it your cakes turn out cutting the bacteria spots away?? I have been told many times not to do this, but i was wondering if it really works? Thanks

Those are the long half pint jars aren't they?
Those are just as bad as they pint jars. You need the short fat ones.

They have half pint jars that are as tall as pint jars, but skinnier. I don't like the at all.

I haven't done anything with it yet because its not done colonizing but I'll probably do what RR said and cut it in half just below the spot. I'll let you know how it works

WHy does the taller 1/2 pints matter? That's what I'am using and everything is fine so far, couple of days until 100% growth including inside.

Taller half pint jars work fine. That's what I've always used just because I couldn't find the shorter ones for a while.
The few minor down sides:
-The taller ones take a little longer to colonize because there is a longer distance between the inoculation points and the bottom of the jar (last to colonize). Doesn't cause any real problems, just tacks on a few extra days.
-Taller jars are a little tougher to birth. Not super difficult, but they need a few more smacks.

The giveaway for bacteria is the distinct line where the mycelium stops. Normally, mycelium is 'fuzzy' on the leading edges the way that jar shows at the interface with the verm barrier on top. When there's a solid line, it indicates the mycelium has ran up against a competitor. You can birth the cake, and then cut it in half right below where the bacteria spot is. If you cut your cake in half can you dunk it after?
