spot won't colonize
    #8677713 - 07/24/08 08:18 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Why wont this spot colonize? It doesnt look contaminated. Its a 1/2 pint BRF at exactly 2 weeks sine inoculation. Its almost completely colonized except for the bottom and this one spot.

Did you use too much water maybe? Could've collected there, IDK why it would only be in that spot though, strange. I say give it a shake and then if it still doesn't colonize after a few days I'd be worried.

Looks like a wetspot. Its bacteria, or it looks like. Give it a little longer to see if it colonizes there, and if not you can try to turn it upside down to drain that area.

I really hope its not a wet spot. It doesn't smell at all yet. I've had jars with wet spots before so I know what it smells like. I'll flip it over and see what happens.

id say it's a wetspot, just on the account that they look exactly like that. give it some time, if it starts to smell..chuck it!

If you are feeling confident, you can also loosen the jar lid or even remove it for a few seconds to get a bit of fresh air in there. I have done so in the past when I have had a stubborn jar like the one you have.

what if it still looks the same a week from now when my cakes are ready to be birthed? Can I try to birth it or could it contaminate my other cakes?

for safety's sake make a little gheto fruiting chamber out of a 2liter cut in half, poke some holes, and fill it with some damp perlite, then slide the halves together again

Is that BRF? It looks like really heavy-grain Vermiculite or possibly full brown-rice kernels.

If either of the above are the case, it may be that the mycelium is having trouble jumping across to actually fill in the area.

Otherwise, you're probably contam'ed. Keep watch for strange colors.

When you are ready to birth if that spot hasn't colonized dig it out to myc. It will be OK.

Thats what happened with this cake.

Try drawing a line right at the border with a sharpie. That will let you know if the spot is growing or shrinking at all.

Bacterial contamination is often invisible - it's the molds that make the cool colors. If you do birth it, take the advice above and quarantine.

If there's a patch of straight verm that didn't get mized well, you'll usually see some rhizos infiltrating it. Your myc encountered something that made it stop cold.

Hawaiian? He references the thread at the end of his post.

That is unusual, don't expect to get as lucky as this mofo. That's a cake blessed with virgin taint blood right there.

LOL And having a:biggrin: on my face. I have never had anything like that before and probably will never again. I do have another little nice one I will harvest tomorrow that only has maybe half that amount but some of them are bigger.

My point is that getting rid of uncolonized parts are not going to hurt anything.

It's bacterial contamination, with the common name of wetspot, which incidentally doesn't have anything to do with being 'wet'.

The giveaway for bacteria is the distinct line where the mycelium stops.  Normally, mycelium is 'fuzzy' on the leading edges the way that jar shows at the interface with the verm barrier on top.  When there's a solid line, it indicates the mycelium has ran up against a competitor.  You can birth the cake, and then cut it in half right below where the bacteria spot is.  Discard the half with the problem.

Next time, use 1/2 pint jars for brf cakes.
