pan cyans, coir and aborts??
    #867750 - 09/06/02 07:30 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Quick question - has anyone else had trouble keeping coir moist with pan cyans?? I finding that i have to mist a lot to keep it moist, causing problems with aborts - any ideas - perhaps a mix of verm with the coir??

Are you using a mixture with your coir??
I find when you make a coir/verm/oyster mix that it tends to stay moist a whole lot longer.
Add a good amount of oyster shell and it creates a cover of sorts.
I might be talking out of my ass but it seems to have deffinatelly improved my casings water holding abbilities.
Before I was misting twice a day normally now I can skip 2 days and it`s still at a good water level.
Hell I might also be telling you something you allready know

Here are the keys, take it for a spin. Use it , don`t use it.

I havent tried a verm mix yet, but i will next time. I suppose misting all the time is okay for cubies, but the pans go blue as soon as i squirt them...

Straight coir is a bitch to control the moisture. I figured that out the hard way on my first try, with cubes though. When I switched to coir/verm/shell like Derrayld said, it helped out a whole lot. Didnt really have to mist that much at all. I guess verm is a good water retainer.

Deffinatelly give the verm a try then as well.
50/50 mixture with loads of oyster shell.
Give it a good misting when you first case, I mean real good.
The you should be able to get away with light mistings.

Yea, I would case my casings, then give it a good misting and it would usually be good untill after the first flush. Occasionally I would have to mist but not often. I liked the coir b/c you can tell real easy when it was starting to dry up. Sometimes after the first flush I would give some injections with water in a couple of spots just to be on the safe side to get the middle kind of moist again.

I only tried cubensis, but I had water issues, or at least that's what I thought. I tried everything, but there was something wrong with the strain.

I tried GC, but feared to overwater, so I simply didn't water/mist at all. And cubies appeared. From that time on, I do not mist at all until I see that pins shrooms are showing. Then, I only mist where there are no shrooms/pins, sometimes heavily.

I use 50/50 verm/choir. And I do have aborts, both with GC and EQ. I guess they might be too dry. I also get aborts when I mist too much on clusters, but I'm not sure the misting is the real cause, as some of them survive and become beautiful specimens. I thought the ph of the soil might be the problem, but haven't tried to add limestone yet.

Right now, I'm trying the McDonalds drinking straws, and water seems to be absorbed very quickly, but it's my first attempt and on the second flush, so it doesn't really count. And I'm not an expert... yet .

Just thoughts,
LilMerlin.

the pans are being very fickle - aborting when things are too dry and also when i mist - ill try again with a better casing and more substrate. I didnt have this problem last time.
