for the tub in tub incubator should the inner tub be smaller then the outer tub, or can they be the same size?

Most people have stopped using incubators for colonizing jars. Unless you have a very cold house, they provide little benefit and can cause problems.

To answer the question, the TiT is designed for the same size tubs. Tubs are almost always tapered to allow stacking and since the inner one is floating in water, it will have sufficient separation even if it is the same size as the outer tub.

But again, you probably don't need an incubator. Ignore the old teks - 86F is bullshit unless you're talking about agar plates.

I use a cotton blanket as a cover for mine.

Retains the warmth & still allows air & gasses to flow.

I have found I don't need it living in Florida and all, but I still have one because I bought/made everything before I actually tried growing.

But two tubs the same size, and an adjustable water heater for a ten gallon tank will do you good. Some people experience some algae growth in the tanks, and I didn't want to find out if I would so I picked up some stuff from pet smart that you just squirt in the water and it prevents it, so I didn't have to clean mine that often.

Even full of jars it doesn't hold it down far enough to where I wanted my water level (level with jars + or -), so you might want to pick up some zip ties and drill 1/4 holes into the two tubs while you have them stacked so the holes line up, it helped me. I also didn't want my tub sitting on top of the water heater so I got some small plastic baskets ( long/wide/tall enough to hold some silverware) and put them in the bottom tub with two rocks in them because mine liked to squirm around and not stay in place while I was trying to push the top tub down into a filled bottom tub, pita for sure. I was also stoned enough to set it all up and zip tie it all down only to have the water heater too hot. So I would recommend setting the temp before doing all the assembling. Another thing to remember when setting temp is the temp in jars are going to be slightly hotter then ambient temp so take that into consideration.

Good luck.

not everyone has quit, those of us that do use them have good reason to.

Like my house stays rather cold, like, i wear a hoody in the summer and it's 103*F in the texas heat, but in my house, it's sub 70 most of the time.

but that would be the only reason to use one, so i do, and it only gets to 79*F in it. I generally unplug it once the grains all hold the heat to 75 on their own.

hope that helps.

i think colonizing at a temp any less then 80*F is a waste of time. 80*F isn't so hot that contams will grow faster, it isn't so cool that myc grows slower due to cooler temps, and honestly i think it keeps moisture just right also within the tit.

I usually use tits as squeezy pillows and jizz targets though.

Yeah I would say if you havent built it dont. I just took mine apart to use the bottom tub for a pastuerizer. (test ran tonight.) And im gonna use the heater to heat my bulk humidifier water. My bags are colonizing great at ambient.

Haha, like you I took mine apart and used one set to make mono tubs, and the other one for substrate mixing/pasteurizing like yourself. What is it you're doing with your heater? Heating water for a Martha? I dont think I saw one of those in any of your pictures.

If you need a boost in temperatures, there's usually a spot in any house that's a bit warmer.  Try the top of the refrigerator, water heater, or an upper bookshelf.  One of the biggest problems with incubators is the stale air that builds up if you fail to fan them out daily.  If it's necessary to use an incubator, keep it to 81F or below to avoid problems.  I've had brf and rye grain jars fully colonize in two months with temperatures in the 40F range, so they're not necessary, but will speed things up if your house is extremely cold.

I'm fortunate to live in a climate that doesn't require AC, so room temp is always perfect.  In fact, we have to close our windows at night even in July/August to stay warm.  We had a frost just last week.

"I've had brf and rye grain jars fully colonize in two months with temperatures in the 40F range," i think you just gave all of us home (non tit)growers a big boost of confindence.:mushroom2:
