First time for it all.

Here in just a few minutes, a buddy and I will be venturing to buy all necessary equipment to grow my (our) first batch of mushrooms. One thing that I am a little confused about: After I sterilize my verm/brf mixture, can it sit for a few days until I actually inoculate? Ive read that once sterile, they can indefinitely be stored. My next question is about inoculation. I see that using a Tupperware with arm cut outs seems to work. Im wondering if there is something smaller, or perhaps I can just use a small room covered with Lysol? I assume this will cause the chances of contamination to increase significantly. My last question, which I am sure there will be plenty more to follow, is that after I inoculate and the 4 holes through the tape have been punctured, do I need to recover the holes with aluminum foil, or do I leave it open for it to breathe?

The sooner you inoculate the better. Longer waiting times allow any bacteria that may be present to get a foot hold. It's your decision.
I inoculated in my kitchen sink. I washed it with iso alcohol and surrounding areas. I wore head dress and long sleeves after a shower and everything turned out alright, 12 jars with no contamination.
Be sure to close all windows and shut off all fans. Spray Lysol or Oust about 10-15 minutes prior to inoculation. All sterile technique was used. No glove box was used. They are an excellent addition however.
After jars are inoculated covering the holes is detrimental. The jars need gas exchange during colonization. However, micropore tape can be used, although many are moving away from even that with PF tek.

Would covering the holes with aluminum foil be sufficient? Also, what are some other things used in place of Perlite in the FC? I'm not sure if I'll be able to get my hands on some. I believe I read that verm could be used, but it wasn't quite as good of a substitute. I'm still learning, but these are the main things that I wasn't quite sure about. If it helps any, I will only be doing 5 1/2 pint jars at a time with the same strain in all jars. I want to shy away from a huge FC at the moment, unless it is needed to keep rH levels up.
Thanks.

Waiting a few days won't be a big problem, but trying to test the "indefinite" claim will be daring fate. They need to cool completely after cooking, but you should try to reduce the time after that as much as possible.
A glovebox or just a box with armholes is very easy/cheap to make and will give you a great level of protection. It's something that you should really try to do.
With that said, I went quite a while just using the lysol/bleach bombed room, gloves, a mask, clean clothes (w/ lysol) and a shower with thorough scrubbing to remove dead skin cells. I didn't have a problem, but I've made a glove box since then so I could reliably do more sensitive procedures.
People have had success using every room in the house. Generally though, the bathroom and kitchen usually have the highest spore counts due to the moisture and organic matter that is ever present. Yeah, it's nice not having carpet, but the carpet baddies usually stay fairly low.
As far as the holes go, no tape is needed. The verm is an awesome filter. Theoretically, you could take off the lid and just have the verm sitting exposed and not contaminate, but that's pushing it a little far (you would also dry out the cake). If you are paranoid, use micro-pore tape over the holes. Foil has no use after injection.

That's what I was thinking. How big of a fruiting chamber should I get for 5 1/2 pint jars? I'm going to be leaving here in a few minutes. I'm all too excited. The fact that I can have my own mushrooms, and there is an actual science involved in this is too great! After being in AP science, anatomy, and physiology classes, this is really something I hope I will enjoy.. both ways!

I just picked up my tupperware and Perlite. The Perlite that I found was Miracle-Gro, with "Miracle-Grow" something or other added to the compound. Is this okay to use in the FC or no? Also, I'm not sure if the tupperware container I bought will be big enough for 5 1/2 pint jars.
Where is everybody finding there verm at? I thought finding perlite would be harder, but it's proven to be the opposite.

hydroexpo is a local hydroponics supply store, im sure you have a nursery or hydro supply, get verm there, and when you do find it, get a large bag, so you don't have to venture back out for a while:

I don't do pftek, I use this to amend my coir and poo susbtrates, and for a casing layer occasionally.

I will check the nursery up the street tomorrow. I called tonight after Wal-Mart and Home-Depot failed me, and they were closed. I'm thinking about trying the Poor-Man's method my first time around. It will be more discreet, which I need. Would it be possible to leave the cake in the 2 liter bottle in a closet, with no light over night and then expose it to light for a few hours a day, and then back into the closet?

I'm not really too worried about having a glove box. I'm just curious if I can leave my 2 liter bottle in my closet over night, let it sit out in my room where light will be shining on it from my windows and ceiling light for a few hours, and then be put back into the closet.

Yeah I've read that only a few minutes a day is enough light. Hopefully my first time goes smoothly.
