Sanatizing Glassware
    #8676952 - 07/24/08 04:05 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, Id like to pick up a few beakers and some test tubes for starting mycelium cultures with some agar.  What should I clean the test tubes with after i use them? Do I require something expensive like an autoclave/ or would a strong alcohol/bleach solution do the job?  and what about the rubber stoppers?  WOuld pressure cooking them melt and mess them up?

Use Hydrochloric acid if you can get your hands on it.

I use a solution of acid and water at a 1:20 acid to water ratio.
...but diluted bleach works good too:thumbup:

Um just put them in the pressure cooker. Whats all this talk about acid. Or shit just boil them if you want.

I would pressure cook them with all of your other tools, and sterilize them all at once.

I only use acid cause it's quick; 30 sterilization of contaminated cultures/culture tubes;)

But yea, just boil or pressure cook'em. Just as good.

I have just never heard that...I guess if I had some I'd try it, but I have no clue where to get ANY type of acid...Well out of a car battery.
