problems with agar

I cloned some shiitake a while back on grocery agar tek and they took off with great rhizo growth. Lately I've been trying to clone psilocybe and I usually get bacterial growth around the mushroom flesh. I think one prob could be that I don't have parafilm and use saran wrap, but then I remember when I bought petris with already sterilized agar in them and shot syringe water in them a year ago I had growth. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I've been using self poured grocery agar tek Agar made of agar-agar, honey, potato flakes and H20. Please drop insight. My tweezers also are new and don't turn red hot though heated, so I think this may be my big fault too.

Are you using glad or saran wrap. Glad wrap is gas permeable. Saran wrap is not. Have you tried the sandwich tek to clean up your cultures?

No I havent, that wouldnt work if the whole culture was surrounded by bacteria would it. I wouldn't think so. I think I'm using glad.

The hope is that the mycelium is able to break through more quickly than the bacteria. Then just scrape the first sign of white off and start over. Don't cut it out just scrape up a small amount on your scalpel. I've never needed to use it but that's what the tek describes. Good luck. I hope you get it worked out.
