Babycakes

Working on my first grow and I have an interesting lil mistake...
I went out to buy more 1/2 pint jars for my 2nd grow and they didn't look right. I brought them home and compared them to the jars that I have already made cakes from, and the jars from the 1st grow were wrong! Not the 1/2 pints!
I have mistakenly bought 4oz. (1/8 pint?) jars!
So now I have 10 lil tiny cakes going into pinset!
Not that I foresee there being a problem other than maybe 1/2 the yield... heheh just thought Id share....

oops yeah it is, 4oz is 1/4 pint...
They did seem to colonize quickly...
I'm just a lil concerned with the yield. Well I guess as long as I have a cap or two to make a good sporeprint so I can continue on...

Maybe round 2 I'll try cakes AND casing... I'm looking into it now...

the fruits aren't babies though. Check out some of mine

4.2 grams cracker dry from one 1/4 pint

2nd flush

3rd flush

just make sure you put them in a lid with wet verm. So many 4os pics i've seen are a lot better than mine.
BTW they are quick to colonize, so they would be great for spawning or casing.

4.2 g dry seems in line with what to expect from a full 1/2 pint jar. That's interesting and encouraging. I have 10 cakes going, so that would mean >40g dry if they average as much as yours... not bad, I can live with that...

no my average is prolly 3 dry. That 4.2 is my record. One of them weighed almost 25 grams fresh from that thing.

I posted a topic here. Why hasn't it shown up?
I'm guessing it has something to do with "This screen will appear until you have 30 posts or have been registered for one month."
But anyway, I think smaller cakes could have a lot of advantages. Colonizes faster, less waiting to see if it's contaminated. I think contamination often starts away from the inoculation site, so if the cakes smaller maybe the mushroom fungus would be able to take over faster without giving the contams much chance. I wish I could get jars smaller than half pint.

they aren't better with yield, but imo are better for time, casing, spawning, even fruiting as cakes. No cake is made with a high yield in mind, you can get a bigger yield in less time by spawning grain to bulk as opposed to fruiting 30 half pint cakes. Indeed though, the little cakes make great spawn or casing tools due to their fast colonizing. After germination, it takes around 7-9 days tops for it to be completely white, as compared to whatever a half pint takes. I don't think cakes in general have a very high contam rate, but they all have a relatively small yield if fruited as is.

That would be great if I did it on purpose!
But the smaller jars aren't that much difference in diameter, but they're a lot shorter (almost half the height, go figure)
You should be able to find these jars... I picked them up in my local grocery store...
and Amazon has them here....
Or I can sell you mine!
