FC in a cold closet (64-70)
    #8675948 - 07/24/08 11:19 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, i found a computer i can use while Im here! so i can keep you all updated on my grow. (still no camera though....so no pics unfortunately)

OK so all but 2 of my jars are 100% colonized, but the closet that i have to put the FC in does not stay in the mid 70s. It goes anywhere from 64-71*.

To solve this problem i have put a space heater in the bottom of the closet and got the temp to a constant 77* F. The space heater only turns on when its getting too cold, and Im not planning on running it during the day, mostly at night.

*********************************************************
EDIT:->Well, i turned the heater off this morning and it immediately went down to 69....so i turned it back on.
Would keeping a electric blanket in the closet keep it around the right temp do you think? (I'd have to go buy one)
*********************************************************

Going to birth them in about 4-7 days depending on certain factors...IE: if they start to pin early or something similar.
Im doing the shotgun tek and going to have 3-4 inches of perlite.

Im planning on suspending the FC about 1 foot above the heater to hopefully counteract any detrimental heat buildup on the FC.

My question is, would this dry out my perlite too fast?
Should i go and get a hydrometer early and set everything up in advance just to make sure, or do you think that it will be fine?

And if you do believe this would be detrimental to my grow operation, do any of you have a better idea on how to keep the closet temp in a more acceptable range?

Im gonna be busy all day so i probably wont get back to this until way later 9pm-12am.

Thanks in advance for any/all input.
~peace and love

I would use the space heater if you can control the temp on it. I use one.

It will probably be fine, but i would do it just to see what your conditions will be. You might find that you want to tweak them a bit.

Happy growing.

Make sure you keep your perlite layer properly saturated but not sopping wet, either. The very top layer (1/8-1/4'') should be drier than the perlite below so it can wick up the moisture to keep your rH at proper levels. A little experimenting what works for you will work here and you will have many things growing

Alright, thanks.

So after i get the perlite in there and start misting, do i move the perlite around and mist under the top layer then put the "dryer stuff" (the perlite that i didn't mist so much) back on top?

I'll have to go get a hydrometer tomorrow.
Will i be able to find a decent one at Wally World? or will i actually have to go find a cigar shop somewhere to get a decent one? (An analog one preferably)

Perlite is EASY to keep hydrated. When you first get the dry stuff, notice how light it is. Until it feels similarly light, it still contains water. It will stay heavy for months, but it won't hurt to check it occasionally since you're using a heater. Misting the crap out of it won't hurt either as long as you are using a true Shotgun FC, meaning there are holes on the bottom. The only downside would be drippage if you try to go beyond saturation.

When you have new perlite, put it in a strainer and rinse thoroughly. This removes all of the dust that makes a mess. I also suspect the dust "smoothes" the surface of the perlite granules and reduces evaporation, thus reducing humidification performance. Once you rinse thoroughly, let the perlite sit in a strainer until it stops dripping. You'll notice it's still much heavier than when dry. This is all water weight. You can now use the perlite and be confident that it is hydrated until it is much lighter. Don't worry about keeping any part of the perlite wet or dry. Just drill oles on all 6 sides to have a true Shotgun FC and the air will actually come up through the perlite and get humidified to around 100%. Also, there should never be standing water at the bottom of the perlite (which is impossible with holes on the bottom).

Yes I'm using a true shotgun FC, (been reading this forum religiously:bowdown:  almost every day for he past month) but I'm using "Miracle grow perlite" its still pure white, but I'm gonna rinse it a few extra times to make sure that i remove all the extra nutes that they add to it.

To protect against dripping ill have an extra tray suspended beneath it....don't want anything shorting out and causing a fire.
