Do you see any harm in this?
    #867247 - 09/06/02 11:16 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

I am wondering if I can get an answer to this hypothetical situation.

Juan Gutierrez is going to prepare 12 jars (brown rice flour, vermiculite, water) tonight. He is going to sterilize them tonight. He is going to wait, and then sterilize them again tomorrow night. These jars are going to sit for a week without being inocculated. On the seventh day the jars will be inocculated. Do you see any harm in this?

why would you want to sterilize the same jar twice? I have waited 3 weeks to inoculate sterilized jars without any problems. The sooner the better on inoculating the jar common sense would say though.

Why would you say this? If you wait a week, the contents won't degrade. If anything, waiting a week will allow him to identify any jars what were not properly sterilized. I do agree that he should only sterilize the jars once and not waste the time on the second pass. In fact, a second sterilization attempt could dry out the jars some.

Peace

Freshness of the substrate.

At least it didn't seem to for me because I waited 3 weeks and did not have any problems.

Is there a point when you would not want to inoculate, say 2 months even if you didn't see any signs of contams in the jars

Freshness of the substrate.

Why do you think this would change in such a short period of time when the sterile substrate should be in a sealed, sterile environment?
