Fruiting/Casing question
    #8672475 - 07/23/08 03:46 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I inoculated 9 1 pint WBS jars two weeks ago.  Since then, one has completely finished colonizing.  All of the others are nowhere near that jar.  At most, some are 50% done. So my question is this:

Would it be better to discard those other jars and do a grain to grain transfer with that super fast mycelium or just wait till they're all done and case them all?

It seems because of the speed of that one jar that it is a better specimen.  Would my yields be better if I isolated it and got rid of the slower shit?

Did you give the 50% done jars a good shake as to distribute the myc throughout the jar?

One downside to using pints for grain is not much room for shakin'

Oh yeah, I shook all of them.  The one that's done now took off like a rocket after the shake.  The others are still kinda stallin right now.  I mean, I can certainly wait for them to finish.  I just wanted to know if my yields would be better using the fastest finishing mycelium or if it wouldn't make a difference.

I guess what I'm asking is, is the mycelium that finished way ahead of the others a superior organism that will produce more fruits?

I don't believe your yields will be impacted by this unless they are different strains.

Were these jars from different cultures, prints, syringes?

Were all the jars the same strain or different?

There are a lot of factors that could be behind this.

A little more info would probably get you the answer you are looking for.

Good luck.

What I did is I made a liquid culture and some agar plates using spore syringes that were made from different prints that came from the same strain.

In other words, I took prints from different mushrooms of a single grow.  There were like three prints.  Then I made three syringes up, but I don't believe I used one print per syringe.  After that, I used the three syringes to make up 2 LCs and like 8 agar plates.

I then took the best 2 agar plates and dropped 4 myceliated agar pieces into 4 grain jars.  I knocked up 3 jars with the LC.  The last two, I squirted some distilled water into an agar plate, sucked it back up, and then squirted that into the grain.

That last method, sucking the water back up, is the method that yielded the fasted one.  As for the other jar made by this mehtod, I don't know, I think I lost the label.

All the jars are of the same strain.

I figured I'd post some pics:

Overall, there are seven jars.

You could see the one in the middle is completely colonized.  The rest aren't even close and they don't look like they're doing much day-to-day, either.

If I'm going to wait for the others to finish instead of doing a g-2-g transfer, should I put that finished one in the fridge?

I doubt the others will be done, even in a week.
