Sterilization The Way the top 40 countries of the world do
    #8673570 - 07/23/08 08:24 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Ok so, My idea is simple and based on research...though im still developing it. 40 some odd countries use high energy radiation, such as x-rays and gamma rays to sterilized foods sold in most supermarkets. X-ray tubes and the high-voltage power supplies used to run the xray tubes, as well as the lead bricks needed for shielding are available online (www.unitednuclear.com). X-rays would be perfect for bulk substrate in that it is a very effective killer of organisms (versus non-ionizing radiation like microwaves), it also would be able to penetrate through the entire substrate, killing everything throughout the substrate. Since residual radiation would be non-existant (no neutron radiation means no nuclear contamination) and contamination from the source is impossible since there is no constant radioactive decay from the source, it can be switched on and off. One could easily sterilize pounds of subtrate, from grain to pf jars by the dozens to poop/straw all with 100%25 kill rate.

Questions? Comments? What do you guys think?

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.

Reason:
Sure, spend $100,000 on an X-Ray machine instead of $40 on a pressure cooker.  It's all good.  I'll move this to cultivation.  It's off topic in Advanced Mycology.

I will second that!!!!!

LOL

I just purchased some pre poured agar dishes that claim to be Gamma sterilized. They had better sell alot of these to recoup that investment.

The average home cultivator wouldn't need to sterilize enough substrate to justify spending that much money on a sterilization method. Hell, even commercial operations usually use large autoclaves.

actually the setup wouldnt cost much more than a few thousand...and would be much more effective...but whatevs...it was just a thought...

and on second thought, it was a good idea that this was moved...since it has nothing to do with the actual mycology portion... my bad guys

I wonder if you could use the xray machines they use in dental offices. I see those all the time at local auctions.
