Many brands of potting soil have trichoderma spores added as a beneficial organism, which it is. . .for plants.  Potting soil was a common casing material in the 70's and 80's, but with the development of peat/verm based casings in the 90's, potting soil fell from favor.  For some reason, those who want an 'out of the bag' solution seem to be trying to promote it once again.

If you do chose to use commercial potting mixes as casing material, proper pasteurization is a must.

not asking if it needs to be cooked..

im asking if the contents of my mix will be suitable as a casing layer? not sure how this post has anything to do with that quote other than they both have the word "potting"??

more specifically for those without a brain:

will anything in that list of stuff kill, mame or harm the myc in any way? will it work to case with?

im quite aware anything i case with, needs to be sterilized.

The composted manures are going to be nutrient rich. This may cause overlay.

thanks guys for the replies.

would it work better to spawn my cakes to the mix, then add a straight verm casing layer? as sort of a monotub approach? or would this just be a waste or time?

maybe my terminology is off. haha let me know.

waiting for my jars to colonize, then i have 12-4oz jars ill be casing. ALL of them. so.. im wanting to try a few different things and see what works best for me.

Well now, aren't we off to a good start!

To answer your question, don't use anything with dolomite lime.  It has too much Mg.

#1, seeing as how you are worried about harming the myc, get a little bit of that trichoderma, which a high percentage of potting mixes harbor, going on your casings and see how that turns out for ya.

#2, anyone WITH a brain would have comprehended that the quote says " PASTEURIZE", not sterilize.

There is a difference.

Good luck to ya!!

thank you Roger! just the man i wanted to hear from.

as for the pasteurize/ sterilize comment,
are you joking? was that needed? does it have any relevence to this thread? i know the difference, im aware, dont lose any sleep over it buddy. next time dont waste the bandwidth.

it errks me how a year ago, this site was nothing but helpful and willing to teach those newcomers, now every post i read, i see a handful of pointless flames, and rude comments. If you dont have something good to add to the original post, dont post at all.

your post count, doesnt make you any less of a noob, or any smarter than you were when you registered, so please people, save the rude'ness for your inlaws, not your fellow shroom growers.

dont hate, appreciate.
