Couple questions...
    #8671505 - 07/23/08 12:05 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Which grade of perlite is best suited for terrariums?  I bought a bag of bigger grade stuff, like small pebble sized, and then I got some finer stuff too and kind of mixed it together.  What does everyone else use?  Also, how long does it usually take for the mycelium to grow through a casing layer?  Its been like 5-6 days now and I dont see anything.  Ive keep the casing pans covered in aluminum foil and  theyre in my closet which is above 80 degrees.  Any ideas or recommendations?  Thanks guys...

pics , how deep was your casing? 4-5 inches of perlite works best; also why dont you learn cakes before moving to bulk?

You don't need to drill a lot of holes.  Some growers choose to fan several times per day instead.

i am doing regular cakes and then i did some under a casing layer too.    just wanted to see which way worked better.  also, i didn't ask for advice about cakes vs. casing, read the question.  not trying to be an ass, but i don't see why which method i'm using is of any concern.  i've already started so it's a mute point anyhow.

the casing layer is about 2 inches deep, the crumbled substrate is about 1/2-3/4 inch deep.  i used 1/2 verm. 1/2 peat moss for the casing.  plus 4% HiYield hydrated lime.  i'm gonna pick up some pH strips today.  also, about the perlite, i didn't ask how deep, i asked what grade?  fine or coarse?  thanks guys!

Casing 2 inches and substrate of 1/2 should be the other way around.  In fact don't use any less than an inch of substrate. 2-3 is what works best imo with crumbled cakes, and about a half inch of casing. Maybe you're incubating it too hot too. Over 80 degrees is a bit hot because the substrate generates its own heat and you shouldn't go past 85 or it can halt/stall the mycellium.

ok thanks for the info.  i thought i read somewhere on this site that it was a 1:4 ratio of substrate to casing?  maybe i made that up.  actually, i just went and checked the casing again this morning, i can see a couple tiny spots of mycelium poking through, so hopefully i'm ok.
