Calcium hydroxide Question
    #8671053 - 07/23/08 10:02 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

Hunting in vain for the preferred "Hydrated Horticultural Lime" I ended up purchasing Calcium hydroxide aka "Kalkwasser" (thanks tripsis for sharing that idea).
To may dismay it had a remark on the package saying to not use with fish intended for human consumption.
Being the only thing I had on hand I used it for my first try in casing technique and it worked out OK so far.

So given that warning will my precious mushrooms be contaminated with heavy metals of all kinds?

For future projects I will refrain from using it, but what are your thoughts on that. Is it OK to eat them.....

Damn, pity you got it. I bought some too and it burnt the hell out of the mycelium. I had to do a rescue operation on it and recase it without.

In the end I opted in for buying a bag of ground limestone (calcium carbonate), which so far has been working beautifully.

Unfortunately I have no idea whether your mushrooms are alright to eat or not. Did it come with an MSDS?

No, it just says Calcium hydroxide and above mentioned warning.

The substrate produces alright so far. I used a little less then the recommended 1/4 Part of lime in the 50/50 casing layer mix. So I think it did not burn my substrate.

I even pondered about calling the manufacturer of this stuff. I mean you do not want to poison your fish if you use this in an aquarium, so it can not be so bad, can it?

Well, you wouldn't think so. It's really strange it doesn't have an MSDS, although the one mine came with was completely useless.

If you really are concerned, calling the manufacturer isn't a bad idea.

So you would advise against "Kalkwasser" even if it were free from Pb or other shit.. ?

In my extremely limited experience with it, it burnt the mycelium. But you found it different, so providing it isn't carrying heavy metals, I don't see how it would be any different to the hydrated lime that is more commonly used. I still think technically it should be the same thing, which if so, is often recommended to be used. Personally, I'm happy using calcium carconate instead, but I don't get that immediate pH swing that calcium hydroxide gives.

Well, it is my first try with casing so my experience how the mycelium should react is somewhat limited. I had some nice fruits, thats why I thought it is ok. But maybe it could do better.

Thanks for responding so fast tripsis. Guess I will contact the manufacturer about exact content.
