they keep on comin..woohoo
    #866978 - 09/06/02 10:50 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I am brand new to this message board, and somewhat new to cultivation. This is my second attempt. My first was attacked by fruit flies, so I lost the whole thing.

But anyways. My experienced friend has been helping me get setup til this point, but he has decided it is time for me to venture on my own...so here i am. I am growing yipa li's(sp?) in a modified dung brothers kit. We added BRF/Verm cakes to the dung, mixed appropriately, and all was well up til that point. Now my babies are finally poking through. The only problem is that they are so small. The grow to be about 1 inch tall, then just stop and sit there, and sit there, for about two weeks now.

I have had my share of problems that you may want to know about. There was a slight problem with the amount of water, where puddles formed on top of the dung. Those were soaked up, and the problem fixed. But it did kill some of the mushrooms...I dunno if that would cause a growth problem or not

Well, if i left out any info, please let me know thanks in advance

Sounds like it's too humid and there's not enough air exchange. Try fanning them.

I air them out several times a day, and my friend also said that they may be too humid because the mycelium is starting to grow on the mushrooms themselves. How would I go about making it less humid?

OH, one other thing...it is starting to get cool around these parts, like low 70's. Should they be warmer?

Low 70's is perfect for fruiting. Try reading the Cultivation FAQ. It looks like you could benefit from it.

Peace

All right, a bunch of new pins last night...but still one problem. They are all growing on one side of the dung...literally. They are stuck between the dung and the casing, and it does not look like they will poke through to the top, is it okay to move them? There are tons and tons on one side and nothing on the other

hehe, na dont be doing that.

what i would do is pick all the mushies off.......then put a simple casing layer of just damp vermiculite....if some patches of the verm colonise much faster than the other side, then put another layer of damp verm on the bits that are popping thru...do this until all the verm is colonised at more or less the same time......then fruit

Yeah, I agree, what you should do is get rid of those shrooms that have been sat there two weeks. Add a casing layer, peat /vermiculite or coir/verm (50/50).
Sounds like the isn't enough moisture in the substrate, that why the shroomies stopped growing.

Good luck

dream, could you elaborate on what you said more... i am intrigued. By casing layer, do you mean the dung that I used? Does the peat/verm go on top of that? Will this cause more to grow? Do remember that some are in there right now, what do I do with those?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, I am new

What i believe he meant was to pull off all the mushies that have started and that seem to have stalled and then  Case (FAQ)  the dung with a 50/50 mix.

Basicly the casing is a mini micro climate for your dung, that helps keep the humidity high, and also helps with primordia (start of pin heads) formation.  Just check out the casing FAQ and you should be set....Good luck!!

P.S.  is there any way you could post any pics?

Thanks for the info, I am still kinda confused, but I am about to read the casing FAQ, so that should help! I am sorry, I cannot post any pics, no way to get em onto PC  :frown:

The veil broke on a couple of the ones that were in there, so I picked those today. I hope I am correct in assuming the veil is the little white thing that connects to both the cap and the stem. Anyways, I got one monster, must be about 7 inches tall, the rest are prolly bout 2 or three. I am gonna leave the ones with the unbroken veils in a couple more days, then pick the whole flush.

Then I will try recasing the dung and see what happens. Thanks a bunch everyone. I am gonna have to get a digi camera before I go at it again.

OK, i just read the FAQ, but I have one more ?. I am using the dung, so I just replace where the crumbled cakes are in the process with my dung?

Yes. Make sure you completely clean off all pins, mushrooms, and remnants before you case to avoid rotting matter on your substrate.
