question about straw
    #8668802 - 07/22/08 06:47 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I've tried straw log and baskets twice now. The last time, i got pinning but it was a weed mushroom. Also cobweb mold(killed) then green mold after i threw it outside. My question is should i leave the straw basket out of an incubation box? Seems the heat and moisture coming off the straw collects and keeps the straw wet. which i believe is why my straw baskets failed? Also the area i have my baskets in may have something to do with it?In my art studio not damp little dusty?(i'll be getting apt soon so i'll put everything there). I ve had some mushrooms grow outside though.

(these where left for dead on straw log.) print from this one.

Also was thinking of putting my poo in jars and pasteurizing them that way. then adding them to the straw. Would rye grain be better then WBS too? Just killing me that i can do everything LC G2G with only a GLOVE BOX.Maybe throw out one jar here and there and it fails right at the end when i've done it before.
:banghead:

thanks

You should NEVER incubate anything, but large substrates such as straw logs and laundry baskets can produce up to 20F extra heat on their own.  If you're 'incubating' at 80F, your substrate can easily reach 100F, killing the mycelium and leaving the straw open for competitor fungi.  Allow straw logs and laundry baskets to colonize in room temperature or slightly below.

In addition, silly incubators tend to cut off the gas exchange, which further increases chances of contamination.

OK i made a box like in your video on straw log tek.(that is what i put it in?) But i think may need to drill the holes larger? I'll leave my straw out next time see if that works. I'm happy i got pins just wrong mushrooms:confused: I had water collecting on the lid dripping down on my straw. Which lead to cobweb i think. I've tried straw logs but they seem to stall? i don t think i cut the holes big enough for air exchange. I 'll keep trying.
thanks for your DVD and info RR
