 Question for European Shroomerites about Roma, or Gypsies

Why is it that there is such strong anti-Roma sentiment throughout Europe?
With the recent burning of the Roma camp in Italy, the mandatory sterilization programs that many European countries have had regarding them (Norway didn't stop theirs until '77, and I think one Eastern European country continued until '04), and the fingerprinting program in Italy requiring all Roma to be fingerprinted...
The outspoken hate of even politicians against Roma, calling them a plague of society, restrictions against speaking Roma or playing traditional Roma music...
Forcing Roma to go to schools for delinquents, or completely Roma schools where the education quality is far less than the average school...
The US even got in on it in 1885 when they banned Roma from emigrating.
There were decent sized Roma populations in French Louisiana and Virginia I guess... I remember some used to camp in woods next to my elementary school when I was a kid.
But it seems like the worst crimes Roma are ever accused of are pickpocketing and trespassing.
So why such strong anti-Roma sentiment?

People hate wandering folk. I'm not really sure why, they just do. Almost every single race or group, throughout history, living a wandering lifestyle has been absolutely terrorised for no good reason.
They also serve as a convenient scape goat whenever anything goes wrong. I don't know about other countries in Europe, but the biggest selling newspaper in England (The Daily Mail) runs an article almost every issue about how those evil gypsies are CAMPING IN A FIELD, and how this is a threat to our very way of life.

The Roma are mostly all criminals THAT'S WHY! It's their nature.
Perhaps they would be accepted if they obeyed the law, race aside.

Why do you say they're all criminals?
It seems like the most they ever get charged with is pickpocketing or trespassing.
Everyone on this site is a criminal.
I mean, at least the Roma aren't driving around in tricked out cars pumping bass, selling crack and blasting automatics everywhere.

Maybe people are just jealous in some cases. I'd love to be wandering, and not to be tied down. Maybe people hate them because subconsciously they see that the Roma are free of some of the chains that bind the rest of society.
