[Images] Mold, Advice on Harvest, please help!
    #8668077 - 07/22/08 02:44 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Hi

Heres some shrooms growing, not sure what strain, they said amazonian but they dont seem to look like amazonian from the pictures ive seen.
basically there seems to be some blue/green patches just under the surface of the cake, i have no idea what its like inside.
As you cans see from the photos theres 1 big one, a few medium and many small ones. around the neck of some of the mushrooms are dark blue streaks, is this just bruising?

The growth seems to have slowed severely the last few days, yet i dont think the larger ones are ready for harvest... maybe im wrong, please let me now if they are!

i hear that green mold doesnt mean the mushrooms are now useless, but as this is not an obvious green but more blue, are they inedible?
Also i must of done something wrong as they arnt all growing equally, should i harvest the larger ones and wait for the smaller ones to develop, or dunk it with the small ones/cut them off then dunk it?
im going away for 10 days on sunday, is it pointless to just leave them in the cupboard whilst im away?

thanks very much for your help!

It's just bruising. You'll want to dunk that after it finishes up this flush. Growth is probably slow because of low moisture in the substrate. It should fruit better after you dunk it.

Also, varying size mushrooms are fairly typical, even from isolates. Working with an isolate will give you mor even fruit sizes, but there will always be variations.

should i wait for all the mushrooms to grow before dunking, or just the larger ones?
should i take all the little mushrooms off?
after i dunk it can i leave it for 10 days whilst i'm away without maintenance?

thanks

Wait a few days, the small ones will keep growing, but yes, it's best to harvest all at once if you can.

You probably shouldn't leave it, as you optimally should be misting and fanning your FC, but I don't think it would cause too much trouble, maybe a slightly reduced yield from the extra water it won't be getting from mistings.

In 10 days, you'll probably have full grown fruits and then some, but if you don't mind the purple mess the spores will make when they drop, and don't mind the risks associated with leaving a grow unattended for a while, go right ahead and leave it. You won't get optimal results, but it'll probably still fruit just fine.

I would harvest all of those now and dunk for 24 on that thing. It looks DRY. It will thank you with a much better 2nd flush. I don't think you can get away with 10 days of no maintenance. The most I have ever been able to get away with was 3. That was pushing mine to the limit. Another day and they would have dried up on me.

I don't know about that Skee. Not saying you don't know what your talking about, but that just looks like a flat cake just sitting on verm. That thing needs to be misted daily to maintain moisture. What kind of set up do you keep that tray in? Do you mist it? Give us some details on the fruiting chamber you use.

i've slacked on misting the last few days, shameful i know but very busy.

if i dunk now should i take off all the tiny ones?

sorry to be a pain and go against everything you guys have said but>>>>

see how just under the cap looks dark well thats a sign of way too much moisture and the mushroom is rotting from that area

its either too wet or you have a bacteria contamination

so you dont want to listen to me >>>>>then try this pluck your big mushrooms off and break apart at the point where cap meets stem i bet the top part of your shrooms is like sludge inside and all black

i told you what i think
its your choice to make your assumption now

i can tell you that that the bruising on the stem under the cap is not normal its either bacteria contamination and or rotting from the inside out

LOL That's how it is sometimes.

Did you just add some water to that verm recently? There is humidity. The fuzzy stuff on the stems lets you know that. But from others that I have seen, the look like they were drying up and then where the fuzzy on the stem is they re-hydrated.

But right now your choice of action is probably wise. If it's dry one more day wont hurt.

Did you case that cake with verm or is it just the cake.

The biggest problem I see is lack of air exchange.  You seriousy need to up the fresh air supply.  That's why the stems are fat and the caps tiny and trying to abort.  Pick those fruits off, dunk for a few hours, and put into a plastic tote that you can fan out a few times daily, or drill holes in per this shotgun terrarium tek.

Now you have four people telling you four different things.

I am a complete n00b myself, which means that for the past couple of months I have been pretty much searching these forums madly...

From the many pictures / grows I have seen here, small caps like that with large stems is mainly an indication of insufficient FAE, which also provides a better atmosphere for contaminants.

You may want to consider doing the hokey pokey, and turning yourself about.

It looks like bruising to me for sure. I bow to the experts on what the cause is, though. I seem to often get mad bruising that doesn't really affect anything. Ususally that is just on the cake, though.

I think the idea that it is "trying to abort" kind of makes sense to me.
