Question about colonizing jars
    #8668338 - 07/22/08 03:49 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, so i've had my jars colonizing for a few weeks no, so far so good, no contams in any jars. One jar stalled though and is still at like 20%-30% colonization, the rest got to about 70%-90% colonization then sort of slowed down a lot. I know the temperature dropped in this room to a noticeable difference, and I think this is what severely slowed the colonization. I just moved all my jars into an attic above my garage. It is much warmer up there, but I doubt its too warm. My question is, is it possible conditions can be too warm/hot for colonization and cause issues? And also, in this attic am I more open to contams than the closet I was in earlier?

Your attic will see some crazy high temps. Get those things out of there!

Just how cold is it in there that you think it's the problem?

I wouldn't say its cold, its actually part of the attic, but part of the house, it doesn't get any AC, but is not really hot like the the attic, so it was a perfect candidate. The temperature is controlled by weather conditions, its been raining a lot here lately cooling things off and thats when i noticed a steady decline in speed. Let me go take a temperature in there, i'll post the temp in a sec.

Now I have another question, being the idiot I am, I transfered the jars from my attic back to the closet, and dropped the jars on my way in. They all fell out and got shook up a bit, nothing broke or cracked, but should the jars be ok? I'm not sure if this can damage anything or not.

They are BRF cakes with a layer of dry vermiculite, if that is the same as PF, then yes.

You could have upset the dry vermiculite layer.  This might have let contaminates into the substrate.  I am pretty sure I read a thread here a few days ago where someone's cat knocked their jars off of a shelf and they were overtaken by green mold the next day.  Don't mean to scare you or anything.  They might be fine, though.

^^ As long as the little bastards didn't sneak their way in there during inoculation. IME the jars slowed a bit once they reached 80-90%. They exploded by a good 60% in one week and slowed to a crawl after 80. But that was just my jars.

Thats exactly the pattern my jars took. Except one is still around 20%-30%. I've seen contams before, my first time, every jar was colonized with 100% pure nasty shit contams, it was gross. This time I have seen nothing but bright white clean healthy mycelium.

So what was the temp in your closet. Mine stayed at about 72-78. Just remember, contams love higher tempatures, don't favor the pricks.

Ahahaha  at least you caught yourself.

Yeah i'd say ranges from 70-80 degrees. I don't think its too hot to the point where contams would infest it. I was just getting excited at the speed they were colonizing at after a little bit of a slow start, then it just slowed down a lot. Oh well.

70-80 is just fine!  Give em time. If you had micropore tape over the holes, then they are probably fine.

Lets hope, I just want these little buggers to colonize...I'd say the majority are at 80-90%, but some seem to be lurking in the 50-60% area, and one is still at 20-30%. Sound normal or awkward?

When did you inoculate? Some of mine stalled a little but caught up to the rest in the end. Not to sound like a broken record but, patience. I can feel your anxiousness through the Wi-Fi. It will all pan out in a few weeks.
