Learn About the Science of Recreational Drugs
July 21, 2008 - telluridewatch.com

TELLURIDE – “This is unlike any other drug discussion you’ve ever had,” says Nana Naisbitt, executive director of the Telluride Science Research Center, of Tuesday night’s Pinhead Town Talk “The Science of Recreational Drugs.”

Tuesday night’s talk is also unlike any other Pinhead discussion TSRC has ever hosted: It’s founded in hard science, to be sure, but its subject matter is far from the stuff of science class – and it’s rated R.

Thomas Cheatham III is an assistant professor of medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Utah, where he researches the effects of drugs on the human body. In the lab, Cheatham uses super computers to simulate the interaction between drugs and body systems to better understand what goes on at the molecular level. Mostly, his research is focused on developing new drugs to treat disease, but his breadth of knowledge goes well beyond how to fight cancer or obesity. He can tell you why methamphetamines are so devastating, and in terms that are easy to understand: Like that one month of using meth is as damaging to the body as using cocaine habitually for four years.

And while Cheatham swears that his presentation isn’t a Timothy Leary, bring-on-the-acid kind of talk, Cheatham isn’t a spokesman for DARE either. His agenda with Tuesday night’s Pinhead Town Talk is to share what he knows about how various recreational – not just illegal – drugs can affect the human body. “The idea is to talk about some issues, and open up the conversation about drugs and what they can do,” Cheatham says.

Cheatham says that his interest in drugs was sparked early on; one of his first middle school science projects was about illegal drugs and their physiological consequences. His curiosity about drugs prompted his pursuit of a career in pharmaceutical chemistry, and his deep understanding of what recreational drugs do to the body from the scientific perspective sparked his visit to Telluride this summer as a guest lecturer for the Pinhead Town Talks series.

As Naisbitt explains, Cheatham made it onto the Pinhead calendar following a night of spirited conversation – aided by spirits – at the Sheridan Bar when Cheatham was in town for a Telluride Science Research Center meeting in March. “He is so deeply knowledgeable about the human body and the impact of drugs – pharmaceutical, herbal, recreational, or otherwise,” Naisbitt says. “He can tell you about ecstasy or mushrooms in a way you’ve never heard before, because he knows what’s happening on the molecular level.”

Tuesday night’s Pinhead Town Talk, “The Science of Recreational Drugs,” is free and will be at the Telluride Conference Center in Mountain Village from 6-7:15 p.m. There will be a cash bar. For more information call Naisbitt at 708-0004.

Cheatham will also be the featured scientist at that evening’s Pinhead Punk Science talk, a fun science lesson geared toward kids and titled “Cool Chemistry & Chaotic Combustions: The Science of Spontaneous Solutions,” starting at 5 p.m. at Adventure Rock in Mountain Village (just outside the Conference Center). That would probably be quite interesting.

Some organization(s) for drug or law reform should try and recruit him to do a tour - possibly in conjunction with law enforcement types.  I realize he isn't pro-drug and I think that's what would make it so good.  Anything that fosters debate and presents facts without bias in an effort educate is usually a good thing.

Even if it was simply a forum to learn about the science and effects of drugs one might take, I think it would incredibly valuable.

I bet you most people on the shroomery, that have been saying the same thing for years, could tell you the same information.
