    #8665064 - 07/21/08 09:22 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

What manufacturer and size (# quarts) of pressure cooker/canner would you suggest I get?

Thanks

That all depends on what you want it to do for you, how much you are willing to spend, and how long you are willing to wait.

I would recommend looking on craigslist.org or your local thrift stores.

I picked up an old 23 quart National canner for under 30 bucks on craigslist. Does the same thing, and is the same design as a 300.00 all american.

Good Luck

The folks at the thrift shops and flea markets know me very well. I have picked up most of my grow equipment from these places.

Have been watching Ebay, but forgot about craigslist. Thanks for that tip.

Cheers

Presto makes a decent unit, as Mad River notes.  I have a 16qt. model. It's small, but I'm not that experienced and relatively smaller grows are good for lil'ol me.

The cats ass is the All American brand. The sweet thing about the All American is that there is no gaskets to replace. The not so sweet thing is you have to spend a truck payment to own one...

If you are just starting out, you might want to start smaller. If you decide that you're in it for the long haul, spend, spend, spend!

I would suggest you go with an All-American 930. It is the largest possible capacity that I think is comfortable for one person to lift when full. The 941s are great (you can fit 20 quart sized jars in each run), they're just too damn heavy when their full of grains, water and glass.

AA930's will hold 14 jars at a time.

Oh, well, I run them outdoors with a burner underneath, so I have to move the pressure cookers to the lab before opening the lid...and the 941 totally full and HOT as the dickens is just really too much for me my brother. The 930 I can get my hands around comfortably and the weight when full and hot is totally managable for me.

I see. That puts a hilarious picture in my head, you and your brother running across the yard with a blazing hot pressure cooker! :rofl2:

There should be a spot where there was one, right? I don't think they make PC's with no guage, do they? You will be fine replacing the missing one.

Yeah, if you have the money this is the one to get.  I got mine over a year ago and it was the best purchase i made in 2007.  He's right about the weight.  Those things get real heavy.  lol.

Some models only indication of pressure is their relief in the form of a weight/combination of weights used to maintain the desired conditions.

if your not looking to spend 200+ bucks on an AA PC.  go to walmart in the canning section and they have 16 quart pressure cookers for 60 bucks.  they are presto.  lightweight aluminum ones. they do the job beautifully.  i got 3 beacuse of the price and dont regret it

Why pay Walmart when you can get this one for $79.99, no tax and shipped?

Walmart is a contributing factor to the extinction of the middle class in this country.

That's what I have, it works great, holds 7 quarts at a time, or 16-17+ half pints stacked up..  would I like more capacity? Sure! Cut down on some work!  But it definitely gets the job done.

I agree with this. The 23qt presto has performed wonders and no problems here:thumbup:

I actually found a new one on ebay for about $20 cheaper than that awhile back.
