Re: Beer as a liquid medium

It worked for me...
Beer (root beer), was sterlized for 20 minutes in 15 psi, then inoculated with.
Works good...
Since even root beer has around 0.5-2% alcohol by volume it is more resistant to contams then just straight PDA

Even though the alcohol may aid a little in preventing infection/contamination, beware that growth will be slow due to the alcohol

Let me clear one thing up: 5% alcohol has no effect on microorganisms and do you really think that after boiling beer for 20 minutes at 15psi any alchohol will be left in the agar? Me think not.....

As for using it as the main ingredient for agar, most beers contain caramel wich is a mutagen to mushroom mycelium, so this is something to consider.
Beer does however contain two ingredients found in most nutrient agar recipes for fungi namely malt and yeast.
If it works it would be a nice and easy recipe though....
