cakes with weird things on them
    #8654413 - 07/19/08 09:26 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

I have these cakes I am growing they are PESA.  They have these white hard bumps that are growing on two of the cakes.  They also have strands of the myc growing of of them.  The bumps on one of the cakes has been there for three days so far, the biggest one is the size of a marble with about four other small ones on it.  wondering what it might be abd if my cakes are ruined because of these things?  Will they produce mushrooms?

I am a newbie, so i could be wrong.  Keep that in mind.
I think the white dots are primordials.  Keep your RH and FAE up and they should start to pin soon.

all of my cakes are really slow, but produce some good mushies.

good luck

Sounds like knots are beginning to form...Which is the beginning of mushroom growth.

I wish I had a camera but i do not sorry.  It does not look like the pins I have had before it is a big round marble size thing, its been there for three days and has not grown and there are other small ones half the size of a marble but the same shape and size of a marble if you cut it in half.

Soon you should see knots come through. Sometimes this happens for various reasons. Humidity problems for starters I have found is the main culprit, and many times even when everything is right this happens. Really nothing you can do about it. It is knots. The knots may even form with white stuff on the cap, but nothing to worry about.

What is your humidity reading?

those pics are impossible to see sorry i do not know how to get them bigger for you guys.  My humidity reader reads up to ninety five percent humidity and it says hi% when it is above that so it is above ninety five percent.

that is a relief that they are not ruined thank you very much.  Can these be picked and eaten or should they be thrown out?

Don't pick the white 'bumps' off of your cakes. Let them form into mushrooms. Once they grow you can pick and eat them just like you would with any other cakes.

They are far from ruined.

Blistering happens sometimes.  You didn't give any information on your growing conditions, such as light, air exchange and humidity.  Usually, correcting problems in those three areas will get your cakes flushing.

Yours don't seem to be doing that from the sound of it. Pretty sure you're fine. Be sure to give it a good 10-12 hours of light, good air exchange, and keep the humidity up. Should be fine.

sorry i didn't get to respond I had some errands to run.  No they do not look all weird and long like that they are round kind of more like the pic from roadkill on this post
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4268082#4268082
but the bumps are much smaller so mabye they will grow into something like that
it has rhizomorph aerial growth looking stuff on it too plus bumps like in this pic but there is no fuzz on the bumps and no shrooms or pins anywhere and they are growing close together.  I have a small air pump that runs 12 hours a day and it gets light twelve hours a day.  Summer has been around so the first few days I had them in the fc the temps went into the low eighties then back down to 75 or so at night and now it goes from 74 to 76 degrees because i started closing the Windows and putting pillows to block the sun light.

I just ran down and looked them over again all of the cakes are very fuzzy and have intense strands of rhizomorph myc growing out into the sky.  The first one i put in has the most bumps and is the most fuzzy and has the most Ariel growth. The other two in there just look like they are following in the same foot steps as the first cake i put in.  I put each one in a day after the other cake and the third cake looks like it is a day behind the second one i put in, just like the second looks like in a day it will look like the first cake i put in.

I wouldn't take them off just leave them and read up on rhizomorph myc growth and fan the shit out of them.

I can't see your pics for some reason. But it sounds like it's primordia forming, and you shouldn't remove the bumps. If they turn a little yellow it could be pinheads forming.
