Sclerotia question
    #865490 - 09/05/02 02:07 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

My friend claims to be growing some P. mexicana A strain. The problem is, he's not sure what to do after the sclerotia are produced. I have been doing quite a bit of searching here and elsewhere, and I still can't seem to figure out the best method to get them to fruit. The best info I've been able to find so far is this thread: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum4&Number=735605&page=&view=&sb=&o=&fpart=all&vc=1
But I'm still not sure how to proceed. Most other info I find is either to vague or contradictory.
Can someone please set the record straight once and for all how to best go from sclerotia to fruiting?
Also, can sclerotia be saved for later use, or do they have to be used right away? Can they be frozen or refrigerated?
Thanks.

Ps.mexicana A needs 72 degrees and total darkness( indirect light will produce some)Just leave the jars or bags for 2- 3 months.mex A is a poor fruiter of shrooms but manytimes form sclerotia in the casing layer ,as well as in the grass seed.Dry the sclerotia in front a fan. After they have lost 50-60% of their weight put them in a dessicant chamber.3 oz. wet will make 1 oz. dry. Then you can refriegerate.Store in glass jars and they will retain their potency for many years. If you harvest, dry, and store sterile you can start new crops from a single small piece.A very nice mushroom indeed. This info applies to Ps. tampanensis also.

So I dry the sclerota, then case them? Or do I leave them in their origonal grow medium after they form and just keep waiting for fruits? That's the part I'm still confused about.

the sclerotia is the fruit that you're after. dry it out and eat it.

take care!

You mean that's it? But what about producing mushrooms? Can I do that or not? I want to be able to make spore prints to keep the process going in the future.

>do I leave them in their origonal grow medium after they form and just keep waiting for fruits?
case them and you MAY eventually get a few printable shrooms.
but if you're just concerned with keeping the whole process going via prints you'd be better off cloning sclerotia on agar.

Can I put the sclerotia into some fresh grow medium like I used the first time around, or do I have to use agar?

what about grain-to-grain transfers? couldn't you just keep it going indefinitely that way?

The sclerotia is the friut you are looking for. When the jars are innoculated sit them in a clean dark spot at 72 degree for a couple of months. There should be sclerotia(stones) in the substrate. However if you case the jar there will be stones forming in the casing layer as well.Check out these links.

Sclerotium are not technically fruits........the mushrooms are the fruit of the fungus in question.....He is looking for a way to grow fruit bodies (Mushrooms) from sclerotium.....

Just trying to clarify the direction of the thread....I know nothing about fruiting mexicana.....

I have never seen it done, but supposedly planting a stone in soil will eventually yield a mushroom (given the right conditions).

If you want to have a better chance at it, then clone it onto agar, do an agar to grain transfer, case when colonised and place under fruiting conditions. But even then there is no guarantee that the particular (sub)strain can produce mushrooms. I think you would be better off innoculating grain with a multispore solution and going the fruiting route...

I saw that info at littleguy, but the fruiting info was for the B strain. Does anyone know what would be the best casing method for A strain sclerotia.

Re fruiting sclerotia--there's a photo, maybe in The Mushroom Cultivator, maybe elsewhere, but clear as day is a large sclerotia body with maybe a dozen mushrooms fruiting ditectly off it. So it can be done, not sure how, but the question seems why bother--very efficient conversion of substrate to psilocybin and fairly easy to propogate.

You can fruit directly off of harvested sclerotia buried in a standard casing or from cased grain spawn directly. I have only tried growing from fresh sclerotia but it is supposed to also work with dried material that has been rehydrated.

Francisco,
Thanks for posting the link to that pic gallery. I needed to see what the bags/jars look like while growth is underway. All the other pics I had seen showed the bag before and completely after the scllerotia had grown.
Thanks

Cyndyl

superpimp's last post was back in 2007.
I doubt he's gonna answer your question.
Plus the whole thread is over 7 years old.
