how do i get rid of these bastards? the gnats are really starting to become a problem. at the start, when i would see like one a day, i'd just kill it, but now every day i take the lid off there are like 10 of them. My cacti are only about 1.5cm high so i can't let the soil dry out yet. also this green mould algae shit has grown over the top of the soil and i have the same problem, i can't dry the soil out.
for anyone that is thinking of growing there own cacti from seed, don't listen to the people that say not to bother sterilizing the soil.
anyway, what's a guy to do?

sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth on top of your soil and it will slice the gnats and their babies wide open.
also you can use a layer of sand on top to keep away algae and air out the whole thig for an hour a day or so.

alright, i sprinkled the top of the soil with DE, the gnats don't seem to mind though, they are just running on top of it like it's snow. i did this last week.

DE pwns the fungus gnat larvae pretty quickly, especially when watered in... however it may take a few weeks to kill off the adults too... get some of those sticky fly paper sheets and place them near by to catch the adult flies...
last resort >>> you may want to consider moving them to fresh soil... not recommended when the seedlings are so small but better to do that than leave them in gnat larvae infested soil where the little fucks eat the roots off ya babies...

my thoughts exactly. i will try and water the DE into the soil. i actually was trying to keep the soil as dry as possible so they didn't lay their eggs.
thanks uarewotueat

just let the DE do it's job. I use it all the time and it works great. Don't even worry about the adults. Even though they run all over the DE it is still cutting away at them and is only a matter of time. heres what it will do....

1.5cm is already enough to handle it. Replant them seedlings into new soil.
