i dont know if this has been covered a hundred times already, but i tried searching and its hard to find any info. i was wondering if it would work better to make my casing layer out of verm, peat moss, and rye flour. i just thought it would give even more nutrients.

Casing layer should not be nutritious from what I understand. Some are, but for the most part you want to shy away from things that contain a lot of nutes. The point is to raise humidity and prepare for fruiting. If you add a nutritious casing layer the myc will just recolonize as if it was bulk sub. Leave the flour out of it, the verm and peat are just fine I believe.

You do not want your casing layer to have too many nutrients, so the rye is a no-no! I have used pasteurized potting soil in the past with great success but some will tell you that is even to nutritious. If you have a casing layer that is too nutritious it will just colonize and become part of the substrate. It may also overlay.
Here is what agar recommends:
4 parts peat (pH adjusted to 7.5 w/hydrated lime)) 4 parts chunky verm 1 part perlite 1 part coir. Then, add a couple parts OSF.
Like I said my method thus far is:
Miracle Grow Moisture Control, pasteurized.
Do some more research, good luck.

no..
again.. a casing layer should be devoid of nutrients.. even peat has nutes, which is not cool.. bbbuuuuttt
if you are going to use vermiculite/peat moss, then add NOTHING except maybe some calcium (as per RR's suggestion).. really, you dont need anything else.. the casing layer is NOT for providing food... its for providing moisture only..
I use a 100% vermiculite casing, and it works great... but the peat/verm combo works very well..
again.. add NO nutrients to the casing.. you are just giving any contams something to grow on... peat/verm should be the maximum amount of nutes in casing, in my opinion.. and, in my opinion, its too much..
the only reason that the 50/50 tek (peat/verm) is recommended and works so well, is because the peat changes color when dry, so you know when to mist.. thats IT.. lol.. and thats really all its good for..
for sure use it, and love it.. it DOES work.. but just use the verm/peat+ tek...

ITS BEEN COVERED WELL OVER A THOUSAND TIMES. ONLY POWDERS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ADDING ARE GYPSUM, LIME, CALCIUM CARBONATE. NO RYE FLOUR. VERY BAD IDEA.

and those arent nutrients.. those are minerals..
but apparently, there is some debate over calcium being a nute, according to RR..

I use half verm, half jiffy mix with a teaspoon of lime for every pint of jiffymix. and it's all pasteurized and cooled before applied.

If you put rye flour in a casing layer, it would be green within 72 hours, tops. RR
