I dunno, he was a regular kitty, just a little extra muscular than most kitties. Then we got him fixed and this happened. It wasn't a month before he started swelling up.
He is now diabetic, I give him 2 insulin injections a day, and he's on a strict diet, right now he's crying because it's 20 minutes till feeding time and he wants it now. For those wondering, they use the same insulin for cats as they do for people.
I always though cats eat what they want, I didn't know they would eat till they about popped.

Poor kitty
Perhaps it would help to take the daily ration of catfood and give it in more portions.
Smaller portions trigger less of an insulin response, and more frequent eating of smaller amounts tends to keep bloodsugar more stable.
You also might want to switch catfood to one with less carbs and more protein and fat to compensate. A Catkins diet, as it were.
Consult your vet on it though.

Yeah, we got a vet on the subject and were doing all that you mentioned actually. - A little more than 1 cup of food a day in 4 portions of Iams Weight Control cat food. - About 4-5 units of insulin twice a day. - And all the fresh water the fat ass can drink.
He seems pretty happy now that we got his sugar thing all figured out, before we took him to the vet he was starting to have trouble walking around.

Yeah man, I was wondering if that cat was diabetic by now. That thing is like... morbidly obese. My family's cat was up to about 22lbs before we put her on a diet and now shes down to 17, it made a huge difference and she actually runs around and chases the dogs now instead of sleeping in a box all day long. (she loves boxes)

I think I can actually be helpful in this, I've looked into the matter for you. (gotta love the Internet!)
Quote:
IAMS PROACTIVE HEALTH WEIGHT CONTROL Crude Protein minimum 28.0 Crude Fat minimum 11.0 Crude Fat maximum 13.5 Crude Fiber maximum 3.0 Moisture maximum 10.0 Ash maximum 7.0 Magnesium maximum 0.1 Taurine minimum 0.13 L-Carnitine minimum 80 mg/kg* Omega-6 Fatty Acid minimum 2.0* Omega-3 Fatty Acids minimum 0.2*
Protein 28%, Fat <13.5%, Water <10% Fiber <3%
That means that there is at least 45% carbohydrates in there. Human diet food is carb-stuffed crap, so I suspected cat diet food would be no better. And indeed.
Quote:
Ingredients Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Grits, Corn Meal, Chicken, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Egg Product, Natural Flavor, blablabla
They use corn and grain to fatten pigs. If grain and corn fattens omnivores, imagine what they do to carnivores like your kitty.
What you should know is that diets high in carbohydrate usually negatively affect diabetes, in fact they might even cause mild diabetes to express itself as serious diabetes.
Cats naturally eats birds and mice, critters like that. A wild cat's diet is roughly 10% carbs. Your cat's diet has at least 45% carbs, and he has diabetes AND obesity. See a problem there?
I'm not going to make bold claims that get your hopes up. Shit is serious when you have to shoot your kitty up with insulin.
I think that maybe, perhaps it might be so that if you put your cat on low-carb, more natural food that she might just need less insulin units, have less hunger and lose some weight.
Don't get your hopes up! Might. Maybe.
Its basic Atkins food science.
I googled some more and lookie what I found:
Quote:
There is increasing evidence that carbohydrates (starches and sugars) in dry food are simply not metabolized well by many cats. While obesity is caused by many factors, the free-choice feeding of highly palatable dry food to a relatively inactive cat is a major player. Obese cats are prone to joint problems, liver and kidney disease, and diabetes. . Recent research has shown that high-carbohydrate diets are to blame in most cases of feline diabetes.
Many overweight cats are carbohydrate-intolerant, and should be fed low-carbohydrate diets. This means canned food. Experts are now recommending canned kitten food as the primary treatment for diabetes; many diabetic cats in a recent study decreased or even eliminated their need for insulin, simply by changing to a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Ultimately, canned food may be even more beneficial as a preventative for this devastating disease. . Overweight cats may greatly benefit from a switch to an all-canned diet. Stick to foods containing 8% or less carbohydrate. Many all life stages and kitten foods fit this requirement. Carbs are usually not listed on the label. However, all you have to do is subtract the other ingredients from 100% to get an estimate of the carb content. Most cats lose weight more efficiently on a canned food than dry food diet. Even though they're often eating more calories, these diets are much better suited to the unique feline metabolism. . If your cat is not used to eating canned food, add it to the diet slowly in small amounts. It is so different in composition from dry food that it may cause tummy upset at first. If a cat won't eat canned food, it's usually because of a dry food addiction, or because he isn't hungry enough to try something new. Start by putting the cat on a meal-feeding schedule, leaving dry food out only an hour each, morning and night. Once he's accustomed to the schedule, put a little canned food down first. Most cats will be willing to try it at that point. . Quality is just as important with canned cat food as any other type of food. If possible, buy the food in a larger can, and store leftovers in a glass jar in the refrigerator. Pop-top cans, by-products, and fish flavors of canned cat food have been linked to the development of thyroid disease in cats. . Dry food is a great convenience and may be necessary in some cases when the guardian is gone long hours or cannot feed on a regular schedule. But at least 50% of the diet (preferably 100% if you want to ensure optimum health!) should be a high-protein, high-moisture, low-carb diet such as canned or homemade food. . Your cat will be healthier, and while you'll spend a little more on food up front, ultimately you'll save hundreds, if not thousands, on veterinary bills! . Source !
There you go, its substantiated. Gradually switch her from dry food to an all-canned food diet, a complete canned food with less than 8% carbs.
Less than 8% carbs means 5.5x less carbs than she eats now. I won't get your hopes up but I think this almost is guaranteed to reduce her insulin needs and perhaps, maybe, if its not too late, get her off insulin. It might be too late though, but the difference in carb load between your current food and good canned food is camparable to switching from mcdonalds to food that tribal people eat. That has to have consequences.
If you need help with the carb count, link me up to a canned food nutrient/ingredient list and I'll do it for you.
