I do not sterilize nor pasturize my casing. Unfortunately, I do get grey mold and other molds sometimes, but I have dramatically reduced the chances of contamination by doing 3 things. 1. Sift your peat. Sticks, twigs, rabbit turds are common in peat and harbor contams. A collander works well to remove these. I use 10 cups sifted peat to 1/2 cup lime. 2. Apply casing drier than normal. If casing is too wet, green mold can start. It will grow inbetween the substrate/casing interface. When you squeeze the casing, NO WATER SHOULD DRIP! If it does, add more dry peat. You should hear the water, like the sound a damp sponge makes when squeezed. Add water by gently misting each day, untill the casing is at optimum water holding capacity. 3. Air flow. If air is not circulated, the air becomes stagnant and bacteria and green can form. Best to reirculate the air until pins form, then introduce fresh air. Try puting an air pump into your grow chamber until pins appear, then put the pump outside of the grow chamber with tubes leading inside the chamber so fresh air is now introduced. Hope this helps you!------------------

Thanks Dr... I am using my closet as a grow chamber..it is lined with plastic and I have a shelf unit I built in there...today I went and spent some money on a true hepa filter...nice little unit will clean the air of a 12m sq room, so my little closet will have plenty of clean air circulating...keeping my fingers crossed>>

Just wondering, if I am doing the babies in a selfcontained room, but want to get fresh air into room afterwards as Dr, Charles Lindeman says, can it be done by just opening the window for a few hours, or would you suggest still getting a filter? I am TOTALLY new to this although I have had some major success with some being approx. 14-20in in length...... quote: Originally posted by Jazzem: Thanks Dr... Vlad you have to be careful...not to open that window...the bushes that are outside of your window are probably harboring some nasty little bugs and when you open that window you are going to get lots of nasties floating into your room, they will then settle down onto your peat casing layer and germinate into some funky colored shit!!!!!

Ok thanx jazzem, but should be safe if I do a filter on the outside, and have a tubing running in thru the window? And if I do that, containment is still a factor, would it be ok, to tape the opening and have it that way....Just looking for some helpful hints.
