It varies from strain to strain. All you can do is try it and when you see a deterioration in the strain then it is time to go back to spores or clone another shroom

A good rule of thumb is 10 transfers or less without significant degeneration. Alteration of media between transfers helps maintain strain integrity. Some species, such as morels, tend to degenerate faster.

So in theory, a cultivator could use agar to grain....then back to agar (from the grain) indefinately???? Your are in fact changing the substraight!

I wouldn't say indefinately, it will help, but it won't keep it going 1000000's of times, I have no idea how less signifigant the degredation is, but I assume its not large enough to lead to indefinate continuation.

I would also agree with Workman,
I never use the first generation for
inoculation I sector the ryzomorphic (ropey)
sectors and transfer to a new agar medium.
I have gotten up to 20 generations from B+
and only 10 from mazatapec. So I think it depends on the strain.
