hydro shop all day... half the price of a pet store..
thats very odd that you cannot find coir at a pet store, because its a VERY common reptile item.. are you sure you didnt see it?
but yeah.. hydro shop.. 3 bucks per brick @ the golden harvest in cali

Most garden centers carry it. Just make sure what you get, isn't treated with trich!

I have never heard of coir being treated with trich.. it wouldnt be beneficial to anything..
if you get it for growing, it will NOT have trich on it.. which doesnt matter anyway, cause it will kill it when you drop the brick in to boiling water and cover it and let cool..
trich is a moot point with coir.. I have went through about 50 bricks in the last year, and no trich at all... dont worry about it.. worry about being clean when preparing it..

You're wrong bud... Some brands ARE treated with it. Plants love that shit.

wow.. I have been growing herb for hella long, and never heard of that.. and neither has the hydro shop.. when I first used it, I heard the same thing, but no one could confirm it... interesting
either way, boiling water will kill it, and you could always pasteurize if you are paranoid.. if you get it from a hydro shop, Im 100% certain its not treated with ANY type of fungus stuff.. That is a big no no in a grow room... mold is big issue when you have a grow room, and they DO NOT like mold, as it blocks airflow to the roots...
hydro shop coir will not have any fungus purposely sprayed on them..
I found this
Quote:
Canna Coco also has several important qualities when used as a growing medium. Since the source of the substrate is found above ground, it is naturally free of typical soil diseases. The coconut's organic complex contains trichoderma, a mold which works to keep root diseases in check and stimulates root development.
thats cool.. I didnt know that.. I will take that into account on my next outdoor grow..
**************the more you know
as for using it for mushies.. I have used it from hydro shops and pet shops, and just dropping it in a BIG pot of almost boiling water, I have gone to the point of flushing till NOTHING comes out, and never got trich..
I guess look at the package.. I have never worried about it.. for sure look though.. and again, if you are paranoid, just pasteurize it... that will put the trich in check
