ID Request from New Hampshire
    #8635913 - 07/14/08 11:45 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

A friend of mine spent her vacation at NH. Knowing about this hobby of mine, she came back with this batch of mushrooms. Unfortunately, many of them are broken apart so identification is difficult, but I did find two intact mushrooms.

Mushroom 1:

Habitat: She was unclear about it. On one occasion, she said she found some on the side of the road. The others, in the woods.
Gills: Attached, white
Stem: 3 cm long, 1.5 diameter, white, smooth, thick, feels hollow
Cap: Tan/Orange, 2.5-3 cm diameter, smooth, spherical, convex
No Bruising
Smells like potato

Mushroom 2:

Habitat: See above
Gills: Attached, brown, almost sponge-like
Stem: About 6 cm long, 0.5 diameter, brown, rough, thin, feels hollow
Cap: Brown, 3.5 cm diam, rough, spherical, convex
No bruising
Smells like carrot

I'm sorry for no spore prints and crappy cell quality pictures. I provided more than ample description though.

The broken mushrooms are simply a hassle to try to piece together. Maybe someone can attempt to identify a few.

1) Russula
2) Maybe Strobilomyces

Upon cutting or tearing when fresh, Strobilomyces floccopus, the Old Man of the Woods, will immediately bruise orange, then slowly turn black.

It's such an unusual looking mushroom, it is possible she would have picked it.

Strobilomyces floccopus: The Old Man of the Woods .
