what version of linux are u on today?
i had the same problem w/ linux mint kde only i couldn't even read the hdd. someone gave me a work around involving editing my fstab file and then mounting the drive in terminal. now i use mint gnome and it does all this automatically.

It's pretty simple: Code:
mount -r -t TYPE DEVICE LOCATION
The -r is for read-only and is equivalent to "-o ro" (read manpage for mount sometime). So, if your "windows os drive" is fat32 and an IDE drive, you might mount it like this: Code:
mount -r -t vfat /dev/hdx1 /mnt/winos
Where x is the letter matching the drive and 1 might or might not be correct depending on which partition it is and /mnt/winos is an already existing directory. Following similar logic, for an ntfs SCSI/SATA drive it would be like so: Code:
mount -r -t ntfs /dev/sdx1 /mnt/winos

u may need to add it to your fstab file too before it will properly mount it. or do like i did, and use mint gnome.

No, you don't. You add it to your fstab if you want to be able to mount it at boot and or mount it by device name like so: Code:
mount hdx1
