My bucket is not pinning, overlay?
    #8633123 - 07/14/08 11:40 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

It's been about 10 days since I cased my bucket and I think I may have a case of overlay. Here are some photos:

What's the verdict, and what do I need to do?

The bucket has been covered with saran wrap with micro-pore taped holes. There are about (8) half-inch holes around the top of the bucket that are also micro-pore taped. It has been sitting in my room near an oscillating fan during the day and put in my dark closet at night. I've been misting it 3-4 times a day.

with the fan on it? you dont enough fae, in my opinion.. that is one the main things that trigger pins..

Micropore has lousy airflow. It a great performer for breathable tape but that's tape. Polyfill the holes (it's messy but it's also ubiquitous for a reason) and/or drill more holes. FAE ROCKS! FAE, high rH (near 100%) in the pinning zone, and total food colonization are the huge pinning triggers for cubes. A slight drop in temperature (to 70F, not cold shocking) and light are two other, smaller factors. Lots of crops do fine in the high 70s, so temp is a very minor one. If you're not even seeing knotting, it's probably at least one of the majors that is causing the problem. Let that air flow! At this stage, it is very contam resistant. The slight increase in risk due unfiltered holes letting in more contams will be offset by the benefits of increased FAE. Besides triggering pinning, good FAE also makes many contaminants unhappy. Cobweb is especially correlated to poor FAE.

If you see a drop in humidity from the increased FAE, try the wax paper trick. If that casing colonizes further, it may end up needing an uncased-appropriate environment. That means wax paper would be a great idea since it can hold a pocket of about 100% humidity right at the substrate surface but not interfere with the FAE of the substrate.

Mist very, very carefully. Overlay is simply mycelium growing over the casing. It doesn't turn disastrous unless the overlay become matted down. If that happens, a compressed layer of dead cells forms on the surface and your substrate gets sealed. Once sealed it can drink and has trouble breathing. This matted down layer is most often formed by water droplets collapsing the tendrils of overlaid mycellium after a misting. Keep the water from hitting the surface directly and you may want to reduce the number of mistings but try to maintain substrate humidity. (and wax paper of the substrate will work for that too.)

Got Light?

Incandescent light sucks. The new energy efficient twisted CFL's are better. The "Daylight" 6500K CFL's (as bright as you're willing) are awesome for helping to trigger pinning. Any other 6500K fluorescent is awesome too. The CFLs are common and the price is affordable, so this is any easy improvement if you don't already have a good light source.

If you manage to initiate pinning and get a nice flush, I think it will take the overlay off during the harvest. Could be wrong.

What is that casing, BTW? It looks like 50/50 of some sort, bu I can't tell.

Those lights actually do really well for growing small dank crops too.. I use them to veg all the time..

Thanks so much for the detailed and comprehensive answer, PowerOfTheCoir!

I had no idea that micro-pore tape was poor for airflow. I will get some polyfill ASAP and take the tape off in the meantime.

I think part of the problem is that this bucket is so deep (a 5 gallon "homer" bucket) which leaves the top of the casing around 8 inches from the top of the bucket. This makes FAE and lighting difficult. The bucket was kind of a side experiment since I didn't have enough of the containers that I spawn to for fruiting in my greenhouse (which has a ~6500K fluorescent, humidifier, and fan duct for FAE). I was expecting the bucket to be more "set it and forget it" than it has turned out to be. I will follow your advice and try to straighten this situation out.

The casing material is 50/50+ (peat/verm/gypsum).
