South Alabama Hunt ID Please
    #8620415 - 07/11/08 02:41 AM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Found in cow pasture, around and in cow dung. South Alabama, humidity is very good (75%+, around 90 degrees during the day).
From my (fairly) nubile opinion, there are two different species here.

The first was very solid and hard. They were found in a cow pasture. It came in a cloister of sorts, and had little or no bruising:

The second species that I found was smaller, and looked like cubensis, but there was no bruising. Found around and in cow dung in pasture. They are small and I have thin stalks, gills not attached. Caps are beige and/or yellowish.

Thanks in advance!

1) Maybe its Agaricus or Lepiota, a pic of some mature ones would tell us for sure.
2) Conocybe albipes

That is probably all that would happen because I have never heard of any poisonings from that species.

But according to this paper it has deadly toxins

Alan, it's worth noting that the article (great link, BTW) mentions that they have phallotoxins, not amatoxins. The last studies I read indicated that phallotoxins are not dangerous if eaten. They are deadly if injected.

Alexander Smith noted that we can be certain that C. lactea has been eaten a huge number of times given how common it is in lawns, mostly by infants in what he referred to as their grazing stage where everything goes in the mouth. And we know of no poisonings due to that. So we can be pretty certain that they are harmless.

Happy mushrooming!

Ok you may be able to eat Conocybe lactea but make sure you don't inject it!

Simon and Schuster's Guide to Mushrooms says Gyms are edible.  Do you think I can use that as a defense?

Phallustoxins--I ain't eatin' 'em or injectin' 'em.

Alan, I believe the paper you cited gives the LD for phallotoxins.
