could this be contaminated?
    #8632356 - 07/14/08 03:53 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

my mycelia has been growing since the 4th of july and i might say its growing at a nice rate, the only problem is, i dont know if it is contaminated. In the picture youll see some grayish brownish looking areas...i took another look today and it looks like it has small white dots in it that are really white...almost as if they were solid white rocks. theres not very many but i am worried. help! i really cant tell if its contaminated.

Very hard call, (for me at least),  on the one hand, I don't know it it has been cased or not. and it is in a fruiting chamber or just in colonization phase.  You have very nice rhizomorphic growth everywhere.  If it's not in a fruiting chamber then it's just tomentose mycelial growth.  You don't have a close enough pic to confirm if those white dots are indeed hyphal knots or not.

here are some updated pics zoomed in as much as i possibly could and with the circled area showing part of where the white dots are...the other ones are of a grayish brownish looking area that im asking if its infected. i e-mailed the person that sent me the kit and she said they were pinheads. i hope so, but im not sure.

actually to tell you the truth, this was a kit i ordered online that was supposed to originaly be grown in a filter patch bag which just requires putting the rye berries with mycellium in the bag, shaking it and then leaving it. i decided to take it upon myself and put it in a plastic tub which i disinfected. i thought it was just simply the same task, mixing the rye berries into the compost and waiting...the dvd it came with showed how to do both, in a filter patch bag and in a plastic tub, it didnt really carry onto anymore details.

I'm not convinced.  I hope pazzy is incorrect.  I say that so long as your providing Fresh Air Exchange at the very minimum of 3 times a day, you will be seeing pins withing the next 3 days.  Either way, within the next 3 days you will know if it's trich or not.

Only reason I think it may be trich is because the dots are concentrated in the photograph with the red circle. They could be pins but I  would expect them to be less centralized.

Being less centralized would be ideal, but you can never tell what kind of "pin set" a sub-strain will give,(unless you have an isolate). Sometimes it will be a beautiful even pin-set throughout, and sometimes it will be "cluster pin-sets".  I've always respected your advice pazzy.... I hope your wrong on this one for analbatross sake.:crazy2:

i dont have any updated photos yet, but it hasnt turned green yet so i dont think its trich, theres actually quite a bit of pinheads that are growing out now, they have little heads that are brown. i'll update you later on during the day. (thailand strain t3)
