substrate too wet in jars after sterilization PF TEK, WHY?

Using the PF TEK with verm and BRF, I noticed after sterilization that half the jars' substrates were clumpy, thick and appeared to be very wet, while the others, sterilized at the same time with the same mix, were fine. This also happened to a friend of mine during the same process. This basically rendered those jars a (pain-in-the-ass) considering they will take very long to colonize. I used the proper mix for the PF TEK, why does the substrate get clumpy and very moist looking in the jar after sterilization but before looks just fine and even?. Is this due to temperature or time in the pressure cooker? Thanks in advance!

you need to put some foil over the jar before PC to keep extra moisture from getting into the jar.

yes the lids were covered with foil, the first time, tape even. The substrates then become like a somewhat paste after sterilization. I don't know

That's what it sounds like to me, too. Or did you wet the flour and verm or just the verm?

take your verm and put it in the bowl or whatever vessel you are using to mix everything in, then add the water to the verm, mix it up really well and let it sit for 5 minutes or so, letting the verm fully absorb the water, mix it again, then slowly add the flour and mix it all up very very well..... this is what I do anyway, and of course, make sure you measure right.... 1/4 cup brf 1/4 cup water 1/2 cup verm per 1/2 pint jar

I just wet the verm, but it was a little more than field capacity. Dripping. But I was drunk and thought it would be alright but I was wrong.

yea ive had that problem before i had shitty jars and they were steam sterilized inoculated with sporebank spores (shitty!!!!) and i just turned the faucet on and filled up the bowl of vermiculite with water after three weeks i checked on the jars and nothing had happened, so i opened them only to find that the substrate had turned into a thick paste

That's the way to do it. If you get the flour wet, it will clump up and turn to paste. If you mix it slowly with the already moist verm, that doesn't happen. It's how it's demonstrated by Roadkill in brf tek part 1. RR

This can happen to the substrate when you use fine grade vermiculite. You want medium fine-medium grade verm
