me and a friend want to start rock climbing at a local state park. I'm wondering what the essentials are thhat we'll be needing(ropes, harnesses, clip things, metal things that go in the rock, etc) and how much money can i expect to spend for, say, 1 day out climbing?
I love it because it uses like every muscle in your body and you really feel great afterwards.

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. Also he got a race car. Is any of this getting through to you?

personally I'd recommend going to your local rock gym and taking a class or personal lessons first. They will teach you safe climbing techniques as well as knots, gear, and rigging.
also you might want to check out this book, it has everything from low impact camping techniques to climbing Everest

I haven't been climbing in years, and really need something to get out of my recent funk, getting down to the rock gym would be perfect! so hey thanks for the reminder!

my best friend decided to try to free climb in boat shoes when he was out boating one day. they found a cliff on the lake and got almost to the top, then my friend took a 50 foot tumble down and landed on loose gravel since there had been a drought going on. He was in traction for a couple days, and has to wear a halo for 8 weeks, although he's only got 2 weeks left. When I saw the pic of him in the hospital though, I was like

once you get the necessary equipment you don't really have to pay for anything, except maybe chalk or broken equipment

Basic gear:
helmet dynamic line 10mm 50m 2 harnesses 4 beeners/2 locking ATC belay device webbing shoes chalk bag chalk
I'd contact these companies and ask them to send you catalogs, so you can see what equipment is currently available.
