Without a doubt.....Eraserhead.

His first full-length and one of the most bizzare. It took him 5 years and I think he really put his soul into it. It has some of the most intense imagery of any of his films. It is also very open to interpretation. Make of it what you will.....

I also have a couple of shorts from his film school days ('Solome' and 'The Forbidden'). These are also very intense and bizzare films.

Oh yeah, and that 'white noise' that is prominent throughout Eraserhead will have you bordering on insanity by the end of the film! Brilliant sound work if you ask me!

I have looked everywhere for that movie and I can't find it anywhere. You can get it on ebay on DVD but it's like a region 4 movie. You can also get his earlier stuff too. (alphabet,.....)

I was shocked when I realised that Eraserhead was made in the 60s! I swore it was a movie made at least in the 80s, but done purposely in black and white, because the sound and effects were brilliant! Great mind fuck too

Wild at heart with Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, her Mother Diane Ladd, Harry Dean Stanton and Willem DaFoe.

In this film, Cage plays Sailor, an ex-con who is in love with Laura Dern. Diane Ladd, Laura Derns mother in real life does not like this character Sailor, played by Cage. Cage sings Elvis songs emulating and imitating Elvis, of which cage is good at, including the finale of Love Me Tender to Laura Dern. There is a little voodoo overtones between the mother, Harry Dean Stanton and DaFoe who sets Sailor up for a bad fall.

This is one of the best movies made.

mj

ironically, Cage is now married to Lisa Marie Presley and I am cwondering if he sings Elvis songs to her in private.

For Kids in the Hall fans and Lynch fans alike, Bruce McCulloch's "Eraserhead"...

'I walk around the house...drunk. I'm wearing women's slippers. Man, I must be a sight to behold. But I'm not quite sure; I lost my mirror. And the pizza I ordered offers no reflection. I walk around the house. I think about people who have fouled me and therefore should die. But then, I think of all the interesting crafts you can make with toilet paper rolls.
Once a year, I get drunk in a darkened house, for a week. I get drunk and watch..."Eraserhead", as I think we all do sometimes. It's my vacation. Once a year I have a little black and white drunk-a-thon. No phones; not a single luxury. My horoscrope has been suspended. Loud, industrial noises.

The first three days I just watch. Well, I *drink* and watch..."Eraserhead". The third and fourth day I find myself pacing, circling the TV, looking at the glow from behind. I'll pause for a pizza. I won't eat it; I just order it to prove I'm still -- in control. "Eraserhead".

By the end of the week, I interact with this majestic little film. Not so much words as -- gesticulations. I kiss the screen. I rub my buttered belly on the screen, as I think we all do sometimes. I roam around the house. The darkened, drunken house. Sometimes, and this has got to be an hour before dawn, I put a rose up my bum. You know, the business end sticking out. And I sort of improvise a playful dance in my surroundings. "La la la la la la la 'Eraserheeead'." If you were there, in my house, you could follow a trail of those rose petals, and they would lead to me. Curled up, fetal position, quivering, crying, my teeth chattering, industrial, "Eraserhead"-type noises coming from inside me. And as you pick me up, and wrap me in a blanket, my vacation would be -- complete.

This behaviour might disturb me if "Eraserhead" weren't such a fine little film. Don'tcha think?'

Of course, its not the same as hearing it, or seeing the sketch. I miss Bruce...

Bein a film dork I'll take this opportunity to go on a rant...

I'd have to say it depends on what you want in the movie. I think that the movie that David Lynch made that stands out on its own the best is Elephant Man, which is probably the single most depressing movie ever made by anyone. Lynch really scored with this one and was able to illustrate how shitty society and human nature can be, and how fragile beauty is. It's really good and y'all should see it.

But, I must admit, it is not very typically Lynchian. Erasherhead is definetely the best movie to see if you want to check out how awesome and original Lynch can be. The sound, the images, the pace, the unbelievable creepiness and insanity of the whole damn thing wasalmost too much for me to handle when I saw it for the first time stoned on halloween. Great fucking movie that makes you feel like you are right alongside the main character the whole time.

P.S. Twin Peaks was the shit.

I didn't know Elephant Man was one of his movies...that one was damn good too. You're right about it being a sad flick an all, but I think that's what makes it so damn good. But that could just be me - I've never really been the type of person that follows the same movie trends as everyone else. I personally love movies that make you think, or really get you into the lives of the characters, or what have you. Call me a pansy if you will, but I just don't understand this bizaar fascination that a lot of people seem to have with these typical blow-shit-up kill-the-bad-guy films that make up practically every damn blockbuster out there. Sure they're great if you're trying to unwind at the end of the day or something and you just wanna sorta zone out for a couple of hours...but other then that, I just don't see the point to em (I guess I'm just wierd like that)

Y'all are going to hate me for this, but Dune is one of my favourite films, even though it was edited to pieces and Lynch disowned it.
I wish D.L. would get round to making a director's cut, but I don't see it ever happening now.....:(

I thought they finally did a directors cut of Dune? I know there was a version out that was ridiculously long (longer than the original, that is. Something like 4 1/2 hours.) But yeah, even if Lynch was disappointed, I love Dune!

but wasn't Lynch disappointed with it because so much was edited out cos it would have been too long for mere mortals to watch? You must admit, it does get a bit incoherent about 3/4 of the way through....
I heard about the 4 1/2 hour long thing, but I think that was just some Dune fan sticking together all the outtakes he could find in a hardly more coherent manner. Certainly Lynch didn't have anything to do with it.
