anno,

Nice find man! Some years back I found some giant fruitings of this sp.
in the co. rockies. They were like the size of dinner plates! It looks like you plucked
a button. This was probably a good idea though since every living creature besides
us loves to eat them too. About half the specimens we picked had all sorts of
little beasties in them. They are great though, especially when cooked w/some
meat or fish. The other cool fungus we found was the west. giant puffball.
They were like basketballs, and we sliced them up and sauted' them.
It was excellent, anayways nice find dude!

You've actually never found them? Come to think of it, it took a few years before I started finding them. Most years they're actually fairly common here in Colorado (not this year). Of course you usually end up leaving half or more in the woods because they're wormy, but they're big enough to make finding them relatively easy. One noteworthy thing about them, they like the edges of clearings, roads, and trails rather than being in among the trees. Also, Amanita muscaria is an indicator species for them - if you see Amanitas around, try looking for Boletus nearby - they like the same habitat and fruit at the same time.

Happy mushrooming!

"...I found dozens of single specimens.  That's what I call hunting.  There are only a few "good" hunters here, even now.  You're certainly in that group.  I would imagine if we hunted together we'd find our styles are similar."

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

I live in PA and I've never seen a single bolete of any kind here. I have found some boletes in Jersey, but none that were edible.
