Humidifiers
    #862554 - 09/03/02 09:55 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

What is the diffrence between a cool mist and an ultrasonic humidifier?
How do they work?
Which is better?
Why?

A cool mist humidifier circulates ambient air through a wet filter.

An ultrasonic humidifier vibrates water at faster than the speed of sound causing it to break up into tiny particles at a high rate of speed.

Which is better depends upon the application/environment/requirements.

Hmm...some, most not.

Hmm...nope.

Okay, here we go again, Anno.

Why don't you please enlighten us on the actual operation of each of these types of humidifiers instead of simply disagreeing.

My cool mist draws air threw a filter in the back. The cool mist blows mist that is like a very fine water spray. What does the Ultrasonic blow out? Is it more of a vapor or closer to a steam than the cool mist?

Closer to steam would be a vaporizer, the ultrasonic emits a fine mist NOT driven by air.

Wrong again...ultrasonic humidifiers have a small fan built in.

I own two (different brands) wicking filter, fan driven cool mists and an ultrasonic humidifier. I have a pretty good idea of how each of them works. If you have a link that you'd like to publicize, please do.

>the ultrasonic emits a fine mist NOT driven by air.

Sorry, but that?s bullshit for the most ultrasonic humidifiers out there. They DO have a small fan, so the fog is driven out of the humidifier.

Like in this picture:

taken from http://www.rnicholls.supanet.com/part5.pdf .

The coolmist humidifiers, the ones with the impeller, provide more air though so they are preferable.

My ultrasonic is 17 years old and has NO fan, just a tube directly over the metal plate leading to the exhaust port.
