System No longer recognizing harddrive

Ive searched various forums, some say it could be the mother board, some say it could be anything. would anyone happen to know why a hard drive that works fine would just up and stop running?

As others have said, it could be anything.
Details help.

My external HD did this once. I just unplugged it from the computer and then from the wall socket for an hour and plugged it back in and whammo worked fine.

The only idea I have would be to try it in another computer. If it doesn't work there either, then i'd say there's a decent chance it's the hard drive itself. From what i've seen, it could be several different things, but usually if you have hard drive issues it's usually that. Is it really old? That obviously won't help either.
Oh, and something a little easier before you do that, try the auto-detect setting again in the BIOS, should have that. If not then i don't know.

I did that once...it was what got me to start backing up anything of any importance.
Did you try hooking it up to another computer like someone else suggested?
Also, when it's in the machine hooked up, touch it and see if it's spinning. If it is you still may be able to recover the data. I've used Test disk successfully on drives before so I would give it a try. You'll still probably have to buy another drive to copy the data to though.

no i dont really know anyone else with a computer. And i cant really tell if it's spinning, but it does get warm/hot which would indicate movement no?

You should feel a tiny vibration if it's spinning. I would try testdisk, it can't hurt anything. Also there's a program called ultimate boot cd that allows you to boot to the cd you create and run HDD diagnostics. That would give you an idea of whether it's the hardware failing.

I don't see that you've ruled out the two obvious first choices in troubleshooting. First, make sure it's getting power from your PSU. If you've ruled out power, the next step is a bad cable (IDE/SATA/PATA), whatever cable you're using. Try using the cable from the working HDD, if they're the same, to see if it powers on.
Your 3rd troubleshooting step is to try that HDD on another port on your motherboard. Also try the other port using your good HDD. That's a sure fire way to rule out the MB. I wouldn't start worrying until you try all of the above.
I hope that helps.

Formatting will erase the data, so I wouldn't recommend it. You might be able to do a quick format and preserve data, but you'll have to research that one.
I take it cables and power have been ruled out?

If it's asking you to format it, it's being recognized. What about if you go into disk management, if it shows up, try assigning it a (new) drive letter?

that's the thing. it that's the only time it's recognized. other than that i have no access to the disk.

I'm guessing this is an external drive. Try opening up the enclosure and making sure everything is connected properly. Get rid of any dust that is in there. Put everything back and make sure everything is plugged in and see if it works.
If not try hooking it up to your MOBO. If BIOS recognizes it as a usable disk, your enclosure is bunk, if it doesn't, the drive is a brick.

try changing over the jumper on the drive to "slave". then reboot and see if it is recognized by the BIOS as a slave drive. if it's already a slave put it as a master on the second IDE channel. I have a HD that does that. something burnt out in the circuitry for the master jumper pins or something.
also sometimes you just need to get new hard drive cables. they seem to shit the bed a lot.
