I cut a bunch of soda cans in half, and made one layer in the bottom of my pot. I then covered with tinfoil and made a few cuts in the foil near the center to allow steam through. I out on high till it boiled, then reduced heat to maintain boil. I boiled like this for 90 minutes. When they were done I removed them from the heat leaving the lids on. This cools them a bit quicker without compromising pasteurization. I have 12 jars going from this method on day 12 with no signs of contam and great, healthy, rhizomorphic growth!
Edit -- Ps the water came about half way up the cut cans and the foil stopped splashing of water into jars. Careful to maintain water level. One ran out of water on me and I mistook the smoke for steam. Lucky me I still have a home.

Ideally they should be elevated out of the water but this often causes the pot to run out of water if you don't have one that's big enough.
Care to explain the physics of that? The water will run out when it boils away. Having it touching the jars won't make it stay around any longer.
It's necessary to turn down your stove once the kettle boils to the minimum setting that will keep the water boiling. If necessary during the cycle, open the lid and add more water. Steam for 90 minutes, starting your timer when the steam begins escaping from around the lid, not when the water first boils. RR

I simply meant to say that if you have a pot and you throw some jars in it without elevating them, you can only bring the water level so high before it starts splashing too far up the sides.
The few times that I've tried the boiling method, the water completely evaporates before 90 minutes is up. If you elevate the jars you can fit more water in the pot and it'll take longer for all the water to boil off. One can always add water during the process but I found I make more of a mess than the boiling water. I suppose my sentence was poorly constructed. I have a habit of trying to fit too much information in too little a space. I doubt that the amount of boiling time is a function of how far the jars are submerged which is how I suspect you interpreted my post.
