This is my opinion I do IT stuff, and I'm finishing school for Management Information Systems so I know a little. What mobile broadband are you planning to use. AT&T is like 1.4mbps download, and 500-800kbps upload. Thats pretty fast. I don't know much about satellite, but a few years ago it was much slower than that. Has it gotten any better?

Ehh, not really. I've checked my speeds in NYC on AT&T with full 3G reception and download is more in the range of 700-800kbps. And that speed is HIGHLY dependent on signal strength, which could be a problem in rural areas.
As far as satellite internet goes, I've used it a few times. Just for typical browsing, not gaming. It was just like a DSL or cable connection as far as I could tell. Unless you're a huge gamer, I'd say this one is the better bet.

I live in the 'boondocks' for real...
Around here, I would take mobile over sat any day of the week. I've only seen three or four sat installs, and they all sucked bad. They sell you on huge bandwidth, but if you read the fine print, you only get the huge bandwidth if nobody else is using it (and then they oversell). On top of that, the latency is an absolute killer. Great for bulk transfers, but impossible to use real time. Works great for downloading movies and read-only web browsing, but sucks for anything interactive, including posting to web forums. If you want to use something like Citrix, give up. Watching your keystrokes echo back two seconds later makes it impossible to do anything real time. (Remember, latency is 1-way, but real life is 2-way, so double those latency numbers... marketing at its best!)
The mobile around here has a lot less bandwidth, but the latency is reasonable (100ms opposed to 2s to echo a character). I suspect in the US where you have good cell coverage, mobile is probably a lot better.

Yea i was going to say after I got a response back, but never DID! J/K...Satellite is very slow. If you have watched satellite TV you have undoubtedly seen the searching for signal several times. Of course I have been on one satellite connection with good speeds, and no bad reception. This was out in the middle of a field, and had good reception.
As said above mobile is going to give you better ping times if you will...Essentially thats what you will see in the game anyway. Many servers will not let you play with a ping over 300-350 so 800...Pushing it. Mobile is more "real time" if you know what I'm saying.
Also, when it rains does your mobile reception go down?? No, well maybe a little in certain places, but not like satellite does. My satellite at my 'farm' goes completely black during a storm. I barely have cell reception there, but during the storm I still have reception.
This is something you have to weight the pro's, and con's of. Mobile in my opinion is much better, but like you said more expensive. You can travel with it which is great with what I do, and the speeds are better. One of the reasons satellite has such a bad ping is because if the upload. The upload is like...140kbps someone correct me if I'm wrong I haven't looked it up in a few years, but the speed just isn't good enough to handle all of that outgoing information. Don't get me wrong satellite will browse just fine, but when it comes to gaming and having connection interrupts I would put my money in mobile.
The only bad part I see is the money with mobile, but the ability to travel outweighs that. I actually have the 3G, and I love it when I go places even if they have wifi. I have very sensitive information on my computer that if got out could get me fired...WiFi is just a public network open to everyone on it.

Satellites have such a high ping because of the limited speed of light combined with their altitude. I takes at least 250ms for the signal to travel to a (geostationary) satellite and back to a ground station.

Yea good call.
Never thought about it from that angle. Don't think about satellite very often.

Heres the deal with satellite. There is no selling you on huge amounts of bandwith, on the contrary they have what is called Fair Access Policy means you get 200megs in 24 hrs if you go over this they stump your speed down to 56k. You can pay more and get more bandwidth. They have a kind of happy hour between 3am and 6am eastern time where you can download what you want use as much bandwidth as you want and it doesn't count against you.
Speed varies i get from 900kbps to 1500kbps depending on weather. I guess if you get a bad install your speed could really suck but im not sure how you could get a bad install because i installed my own and pointed it my self with no prior experience. My current signal strength is around 92.
Would i have satellite if i could have something else? Hell no! I like watching movies and i do alot of heavy downloading so im always running over their Fair Access Policy its annoying as hell. But where i live truly is the boon docks no dsl no cable no cell phone signal im in a dead zone.
If your a heavy user go with something other than satellite if you like to just do surfing and random shit its fine. Skype works with my satellite but i sure wouldnt call it great.
Oh heres another thing hughes net/ direc pc use 1 ip block for a large amount of people so sometimes you may go to rapid share and it will say that you are already downloading a file when you are not. some forums will think your on a proxy and wont let you post. This happened to me here at shroomery but they fixed it for me
Equipment is expensive usually when you see it cheap there is a 2year sign up clause for satellite. I bought my unit of ebay for $120 paid an installer $30 to get me my id and activation code and set up my account with hughes. then i installed the system my self with no contract i can shut it down when ever i want with no fees for term of early contract. If you buy one used do not buy any model under the 7000 Hughes will not activate it.

I use sprint mobile broadband and I live so far I have to have an antenna hooked up on my roof to my Aircard. But I get about 80% signal and I get about 100 ms ping.
If I take it to the city on my laptop though I've been pinging as low as the 50's to dod:s servers.
I play some games on it, mostly with 100 ping. I download at 150k and upload at 20ish. I'm not disappointed it's just like having more expensive low quality broadband, plus I can take it anywhere.
