First off, Very Nice, Hippie!...

In response to: >now i let it sit out and drain a few days before returning it to its' tray.

So you basically Pop the colonized substrate out into a big ass pot of sterile water and dunk..  Then remove it.. Im assuming its not just sitting on a counter top, right?.. Do you wrap it in paper towels or somthing to absorb all the excess water?..    Could you wrap it in paper towels first until its dry and then put it in a garbage bag sprayed with lysol and pop it in the frig?  Then return it to its origonal casing tub?..  ((Just courious because a friend is about to try this))

Thanks alot!..

so if you can live with the failure rate, fine.

Failure rate? So far, no failures here, but I'll keep that in mind. Remember that Scotts 3n1 is a composted product and for the most part is pasteurized out of the bag. There always is a chance, though, that a bag could be compromised at the store or during use if one is not careful.

They seem to grow very fast outdoors in this climate (very hot and very humid.) The following image is a 24 hour update of the original post.

Enjoy!

Just a few more questions.. I may have missed this info as I only briefly scanned the thread, but I was wondering- how deep is the pot? Also, how long did it take (how many days) after putting the cakes in the pot to start pinning?

Looks great and super easy, good job! Let us know what the final yeild is.

Pretty much the same as the inside diameter -- roughly 25cm.

In reply to:

It started pinning while I was out of town. If I were to guess, I would say about two weeks.

Since I?m posting to this thread, I might as well provide a 24 hour update of the casings shown above:

Peace

Currently, a 30 gallon fish aquarium which has been turned on its side. The bottom layer of perlite is bone dry (didn't feel like cleaning it out), and the lucite "front door" is left cracked to help keep the RH where I want it.

i just sit the dunked casing/cake on some paper towels or newspaper in the humidity chamber until it's ready to return to it's tray in a day or two, when it stops draining.

Thanks Alot, Hippie..    BTW, ever try rehydrating it using sterilized poo/straw water sucked up in a syringe (Or even plain wate) and shot into the cake between flushes?..    Results?

Thanks

Great question. I'd like to know, too. My friends fruiting chamber IS her casing container. She can maintain humidity within the container just fine, but the casing layer itself consistently dries out. She mists heavily between flushes, but once pins appear, she directs the mist to the sides and lid of casing/fruiting chamber. If she uses a syringe to inject water, should the water be directed into the casing layer, or the body of the cake?
OR, maybe the dunk method could work with her straw cakes. She would have to dunk in the fruiting chamber itself, then pull the cake out, lay paper towels under and then later pull the cake back out to remove the paper towels. All that handling would make her worry about contams.
Would this work? Clean cake well, add enough water to cover the cake, let soak, invert and drain excess water, remove cake, place dry (or maybe somewhat dry) 50/50+ casing to the bottom of the chamber, replace cake, apply new casing layer and mist. The casing layer would (hopefully?) eliminate the need to remove the cake a second time....less work and maybe less exposure to possible contams? Also, since it takes a day or two to drain sufficiently, she wouldn't have to worry about damaging new pins that might appear during the draining. Does anyone see any flaws her her plan?

That sounds good to me..  A friend is in the same situation as you... (Having a casing that would be too big for a pot to dunk it in)..  Maybe even putting a layer of sterilized perlite on the bottom would be a good idea...  Then a nice 50/50 or 50/50+ on top..

One more update for the curious (T3 on 50/50+ cased birdseed/millet).  The first pic is before harvest, and the second is after.  Total yield for first flush was approx. 300g wet -- this does not include the 22 caps removed for printing purposes.  Not bad for a 20cm x 20cm baking pan..

AAWW. They are very cute and delicious looking. I am curious as to why they are collecting along the outer edge, but none the less, they are quite beautiful.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I don't see an unusual density on the edge. It looks relatively uniform to me..

Nice job mickey! I notice you're using my (filthy) oven incubator tek.

It seems that straight cased grains flush best judging by these results and the sjamaan kit I did, among other pics I've seen.  I'll be very interested to see the second flush of that tray.

Oh, and I spawned a large tray of 3 in 1 last night with a grated 1 pint pf cake of B+... I'll post the results.

Again, awesome flush, dude!

Actually, no. I would never use the oven for that. If you look in the background of the images, you will see that there is a foil covered bowl. It contains 50/50+ and was left in the oven to cool down. I place the casing there for the sake of convenience while I harvested and recased the tray, and took a few snapshots.

I agree. It should be interesting. I also had virtually no aborts.

In reply to:

Please do. I'd like to see the results. I harvested the straight 3n1 tray (PR) with no casing layer early this morning. Was a disappointing flush -- about 60 grams or so. For the second flush, I gave it a 50/50+ layer on top. We'll see if that makes much of a difference.

In reply to:

Again, awesome flush, dude!

Why thank you!

Peace
