A local drug task force arrested two men and seized two tons of marijuana Tuesday after a brief investigation, one of its agents said Wednesday Sgt. Mark Morlock of the Counter Narcotics Alliance identified the men in custody as Arnulfo Vega Montaño, here illegally from Mexico, and Guillermo C. Garcia, of the 2600 block of West Southern Star Drive. Montaño was booked into the Pima County Jail on suspicion of transportation of marijuana. Garcia was booked on suspicion of conspiracy to transport marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of a firearm during a drug offense and possession of drug paraphernalia, Morlock said. Montaño was being held in jail without bail and Garcia was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, a jail records clerk said Wednesday. Morlock said that after a tip Tuesday afternoon that a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche was being used in drug running, agents located the SUV and followed it. Agents also determined that a Nissan Armada, driven by Garcia, was escorting the Avalanche, Morlock said, adding that law officers pulled the two vehicles over on West Ajo Way near Interstate 19 about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. Montaño was driving the Avalanche, in which agents found 800 pounds of marijuana, Morlock said. Agents went to Garcia's home, near West Starr Pass Boulevard and South Greasewood Road, where a search turned up 2,200 pounds of marijuana in the laundry room, Morlock said. Another 1,000 pounds were found yet to be unloaded from a 2008 Lincoln Mark LT pickup parked at the home. Garcia's girlfriend and their two children, both younger than 10, were at the home, Morlock said. He said the woman was released with her children and is considered an "investigative lead" in the case. Morlock said Garcia's home apparently was being used as a stash house to hold bulk shipments of marijuana until they could be sold or shipped elsewhere in the United States. It was too early in the investigation, however, to tell where the 2 tons of marijuana seized in the case were to be shipped. But, Morlock explained, Tucson is a drug transshipment point and marijuana brought here typically is shipped on to the Midwest and East Coast, where it sells for twice as much as it would here.
