i bought a violin a few months ago, with hopes of teaching myself (i know all the finger placements because I play the mandolin).
Sadly, bowing is really really hard.

Taking notes is useful. It's really easy to forget things once you get home. Take things slowly, as your teacher will tell you. It will take a few lessons before you can even play anything; don't get discouraged.

How much are you paying and who is it with?
Violin is tough, so try not to get discouraged easily. Also, make sure you fucking learn how to read music. A lot of shitty violin teachers over look this and just have you learn what notes on the page correspond to what fingerings. Don't let that happen to you.

thanks! yeah i've had a vit of a play around on it and seems NAILS! It's wrapping my hand round the neck i'm struggling most with at the mo. I'm looking forward to it. It's with the violinist (well, fiddler) of a relatively local band I really like. I used to play the clarinet, which was a bit random.
anyone else play anything here (except guitar - no offense.) ?

Yeah I play trombone, baritone, violin, and I could probably play some high school concert band tuba if I had a week.
I'm pretty terrible at the violin, but I was the best at my high school Those concerts were painful.
Oh, also get a neck rest, it will make playing, especially in third position, a lot easier.

yeah i've set my personal aspirations extremely low. I can partially read music (i've forgotten a lot) but know basic notation etc. A couple of my mates play guitars and cant read music. Not something I frown upon but cant understand why they wouldnt want to be able to read it.
I'm not paying too much, in your US dollar money it would likely be about $40 an hour. I think that's pretty reasonable but will see how it goes! Notes sound like a good idea, hope to lace my violin in finger/fret placement tape!

Is the fiddle player actually a teacher, or just good?
I learned from an Asian woman who uses the Suzuki method, so my neck had three lines of tape for the markings of the A major scale. My bow also had three markings for the limits. But your teacher may have his own approach to teaching.

it will be tempting focus only on the left hand; finger placement, hand shape etc, thinking that the bowing will automatcally do it's own thing. it won't.
focus more on your bowing arm. because most technical problems come from an underdeveloped bow arm. make sure you develop a good tone. practice drawing the bow over open strings and go slooooow. also check that the fingers on the heel are steady. also, if you don't have a metronome, I highly suggest getting one, it will help you out.
good luck, and don't get discouraged, it's a long process, but worth it.
